Found a new state tax last night. My car registration is due for renewal
in July, so I went to renew it. At the payment screen, the total is some obscene amount. I check the fine print and there is a $120 road use tax (might not be the exact name). After some quick research, I found that both electric and hybrid vehicles are now being charged a special tax since they don’t use as much gas (the state used to get lots of tax money from gas). Death and taxes man!

Which means more road damage & parking garage construction cost.

also would have you believe that the electricity to run them, and lithium for the batteries, comes straight from heaven and are not manufactured here on earth...making them completely green...

Yes, because the transportation fund needs money from
EVs too and it doesn't get that from them if the only funding is from a gas tax.

we more than make up for it though....the gasoline tax is incredible
i fly to houston a lot for work and gas is half the price in houston compared to Cali

non-hybrid, and frankly a bit of a sports car (Honda Civic Si). It generates 205hp out of a 1.5L turbo, so I'm getting right at 40mpg on the highway.
Apparently, the Virginia GA thinks everyone drives either an F-150 or Suburban, or an electric. Heaven forbid you drive an ICE that gets more than 20mpg. Gotta tax you for that.

Between a huge increase in my real estate taxes, high car taxes, owing the IRS $4,500, jacked up car insurance rates, multiple car repairs this year, and massive inflation on the cost of every day essential items like food, I have spent ~$3,000 more than the sum of my take-home pay YTD. I'm over it. I live in a small house and drive old cars, and I make a decent living. But despite all of that, we are getting financially crushed right now.

Can't say I disagree, since gas taxes pay for highways, but I think the hybrid "add on" tax should be less than what EV owners pay, since they do use some gasoline.
If I was structuring that tax (using $120 as the hypothetical full tax):
EVs $120
Plug in hybrids $80
Other hybrids $40
Plug in hybrids driven in town could essentially be like an EV if the gas engine is never started.

Yep…..We’ve had that in Cali for a while.
