Duke/UVA is why conference championship games shouldn’t exist
Conferences are too large now. Schedules determine who finishes at the top as much as anything.

Duke's claim to "fame" this year is a 1 point win over the worst Clemson team in decades. They lost every nonconference game except mighty Elon, and 2 of those losses were by 4 touchdowns. And yet somehow, the ACC has come up with a scheduling formula and a tiebreaking formula that would allow this lousy team to possibly claim the conference title.
If Duke wins (and I sincerely hope they do), it is very possible that JMU or another G5 conference champion will take the ACC's spot in the playoffs. Which would be hilarious, and richly deserved.

If Duke wins, we need JMU to lose. And maybe UNLV, too?
If JMU or UNLV win, they should be ahead of Duke as the 12th team.
Otherwise, Miami could still get in, if Alabama and BYU both lose.
On the bright side, technically we could get two teams in, UVa and Miami.
No one looks good in this bunch (except um UVa, I guess).

SEC, Big 10, Big 12 are guaranteed. American (Tulane or North Texas) seems like a lock. If JMU beats Troy they’ll be 12-1 and would almost certainly get in over 8-5 Duke. Hell I think an 11-2 MWC champ UNLV gets in over Duke.
Miami can only get in as an at-large, which seems unlikely at this point.

G5 champions would hypothetically be ranked ahead of Duke. In the case of two g5 champions getting in, Miami would likely be left out. We're gonna see some holding and PI calls against Duke and the 50/50 replays will go to uva.

The playoff actually works better with small conferences where you play everyone and determine a regular season champ.
You know like the other divisions have been doing for decades.
I just find it so hilarious that the sport destroyed its small regional conferences and now it turns out that would actually serve the sport best from a competitive standpoint.
But nothing at this level of college football is done for competitiveness. All $$$

then they can do like the NFL and form divisions and it will potentially be cleaner for playoff selection, but then what happens to the SEC brand? It is a way of life there, a lot of those states and regions pour everything they have into SEC sports. If a super-league forms and it becomes homgeneous like the NFL then it may dilute the SEC brand.
