Would Ricky Rahne really be the best ODU coach to be the VT OC?
I don't know the ins and outs of the ODU offense, but Richy Rahne was an OC for exactly 2 years at Penn State, 6 years ago! His OC, Kevin Decker, the guy ( I assume, maybe I'm wrong) behind the ODU offense has 8 years as an OC. RR gives me Tyler Bowen vibes. Last thing we need is another inexperienced ex Penn State offensive coordinator.
I'm not real sure RR is the best OC to be had at ODU, much less anywhere else.
You'd think, on paper at least, we could do better than RR.

It's not like Penn State has a reputation for exceeding expectations.

Reading up on him he picked up Heupels offense at Fordham from an assistant who worked under Heupel.
He runs a similar wide-set offense and has had success. But it’s strange they put up big numbers but aren’t overly efficient (at least odu) mid-30s between F+ and SP+ ratings.
I wonder if Franklin trusts him to run an offense and he can spend money on a high priced DC?
Note: odd that Montgomery runs a similar Baylor wide-set offense historically - but I haven’t seen a ton of it. Still run game has been an A+ back half of the season.

On paper (and I stress that), RR isn't even the best option from ODU. We need to be casting a wider net with the dollars we're playing with.

VT's coordinators will be experienced, legit, and well paid. I'd love for the hire to be a well-known/popular name, but that's not AT ALL necessary. Just be known to be great at what you do for years, and they'll become a household name with the talent Franklin will be bringing in.

He didn't put elite offenses on the field, and why he struggled in the biggest games. We know this all too well, its the exact same reason Beamer struggled in big games too.
In the modern game, you GOTTA be able to score to win big more than ever before.

Ball control offense that leans HEAVY on the running game, plays the efficiency game, and the explosive plays break open by either long passes or long runs. That's why his defenses are always so great (nearly top 15-20 every year) and his offenses average ranked around the 50s or so.
He wants to wear you out, then let his playmakers make plays. So, we agree that we know that philosophy all too well with Beamer's offense. I hope that he has an offense that puts more stress on defenses, and maybe PSU firing him allows him to reset that philosophy. He is in fact an offensive-minded coach, so he's fully capable.

And he has TV ratings incentives in his contract.
