That hire + the two coordinators.... I knew / felt trouble was coming
As soon as Justin Hamilton was essentially followed by Chris Marve.. I knew we were in trouble defensively.

I did. From the beginning.
Any time you hire someone who does not have the requisite experience but who is a "nice guy", failure is the only outcome. Why the fan base did not mutiny after he hired two, unqualified coordinators is beyond me. After that, it was just a matter of time. Miracles don't happen in the real world. Once you take the wrong strategic direction, there is no turning back.

Funny how many people say this now.
I remember getting nothing but incoming fire (and zero support) for, among many things, saying the Marve hire was a terrible decision - not just purely as a hire - but from a football program and athletic department strategic standpoint. Not to mention saying things like winning the press conference and having snowball fights with students meant absolutely nothing. I guarantee that the message boards will get irrationally exhuberant about all of the wrong things this time too. ** Edited by marcbvtgm at 10/13/2025, 12:03:12 PM

Yup. You can't stand up to the flow of "the people". All you can do is
wait them out.

I agree, the talent level is not good, development is worse. Pry's doing.

I remember saying this Back...
when Whit and Sands went low ball. Said the same thing when Whit gave the Fu his big contract extension.. Both of these moves set VT back !! And The Hounds on this board went after me.. Now Bark...

Contract extensions don't set programs back; they're just a business cost.
Every coach is close to being fired, but you don't want to say this because you don't want everyone that matters (agents, player families, etc.) knowing it. Like it or not, the "salary" for a coach isn't just the salary - the buyout is built into the calculation of coach salaries. So if you think the going rate for a top coach right now is $8 million/year or whatever, you're not even close. In reality, it's probably more like $12-$20 million. Athletic Directors understand this. Boards understand this. Big donors understand this. It amazes me that the vast majority fans don't seem to understand this.

If I'm not wrong VT extended Fuente after we battled national champ Clemson to the wire in the ACCCG. He was a hot commodity and there were rumblings FSU was pretty interested.

They're not really extensions. They're salary bumps disguised as extensions

It's better now.
Got rid of him early and throwing some serious money at the program / next coach. Time to start getting excited again.

Excited is exactly the wrong emotion right now.
I want everyone to be sober, with a prove it attitude. The new administration has to prove that it has really learned its lesson. I am happy that we finally made the right decision, but that in no way assures success in the future.

I think Hokie fans can finally see light at the end of this tunnel.
We've been sitting in darkness for 3.5 or more years.

Ehhh. Probably the worst coaching cycle to hire in. And money doesn't
guarantee anything. Drones was paid $1 mil. Unless there's a specific plan and complete restructuring, it's just expensive lipstick on a pig.

I’m not doubting you but where can people go to see how much players make
In NIL? Is the site unique to every school or is there a national place so you can look up every player in the country? tia

Have fun while you’re in the nitrous oxide bubble while you can. Which
Generally last through summer & fall & then rapidly deflates after the 1st or 2nd loss or the 3rd or 4th game.

The nitrous did help after the ODU game.
That was quite a drive home. ** Edited by KCHokie2 at 10/13/2025, 3:59:50 AM

And it's not just the program that is set back. It's the setback in context
of the craziness of conference realignment, and the rest of the changes such as NIL and transfer portal. I said four years ago when hired that I hope he understood the magnitude of what was at stake. And it was more than just getting bowl eligible every year...and he couldn't even pull that off. A total failure. Oh well, time to move on.

I prefer to call NIL and the portal
What they are. Annual paying of players and unrestricted free agency. ** Edited by crazylane at 10/13/2025, 10:00:04 AM ** Edited by crazylane at 10/13/2025, 10:00:32 AM
