Coach Montgomery
It's just a lot to ask Montgomery to take over as the interim coach after 3 games into the season and then expect him to change up his scheme especially with the current player personnel situations, etc. I think he's doing the best he can under the circumstances. Perhaps he can pull out a couple more wins this season. Any win should be celebrated as he was left in a tough situation including the athletic department mess brewing in the background. VT basically put him in a no win situation. He's handled it well in my opinion. Go Hokies, beat those Yellow Jackets

Can't polish a turd but he's blown some of the stink off it
He was brought in to instill an offense that he did not have the personnel to run (not sure what offense would work with Drones). He came in late and has at least rallied the team to play hard. You just can't undo three years of Pry's undisciplined approach in three weeks.

Really?
What part of our last game exhibits any semblance of a well coached, DISCIPLINED team? I don't want or expect any coaches from this bunch. This is the least disciplined VT team that I have seen, INCLUDING the late 80s until I graduated in 1991. We had crappy records, but at least we had disciplined players. This bunch is SO undisciplined...that goes to coaching and program issues.

Those issues are a result of Pry.
Hopefully Montgomery had some talks with the players regarding those type penalties and said if happens again, you'll spend more time on the bench. Most likely different issues will pop up all season.

Of course we do. Montgomery is not a fit for VT

agree. Monty is decent coach. tough situation. Whoever scheduled SEC OOC
games for VT should have been the first person fired. All ACC teams as well as other former P5 schools should not be scheduling SEC or Big10 games at all. That IMO would be the only thing that could harm the P2 (if everyone stopped playing them).

That would be Babs, also Mr Nike contract ^2

When were the SEC OOC games scheduled? I'm guessing 7-10 years ago.
Things have changed a lot since then.

Has done a great job!!
Put our players in a position to succeed against Wake! Lack of discipline by two defensive players gave Wake 14 points.

Agree, a great job considering the circumstances.
Competitive and they're playing hard. That's all we can ask at this point. He kept everything from unraveling, which could have easily happened.

Pleasantly Surprised
Other than the end of the first half debacle against Wake I like what I have seen. He beats the hell out of Pry as a head coach but I worry he would be in the same "head-butting" situation Fuente found himself in unless someone purges the damn department from head to toe.... I'm worried this is not going to happen (purge) and "more of the same" continues regardless of who gets the job

Ballein? If the headbutting
Was in reference to him, he's gone. Whit's still here but won't have any control over football. If he's here at all. If he is shame on us but I don't believe he will. If Tech fails, I don't think it will be because more of the same. I think we'll be better but doubt we can win the arms race that college football is and or will become.

What scheme would that be?
He was the OC before the Pry departure.

He's ran his scheme for at least the past 15 years.
He likes to pass a lot, but his particular scheme requires an accurate, quick processing, fast release type quarterback. It's a slight variation of the air raid he utilized at Baylor. If you have the right personnel including quarterback, O line, running backs, and receiver, it can be very effective. Unfortunately, over the past 5 to 6 years, his style hasn't been quite as successful and the results of his offense have been in decline. I personally think he would be a really good NFL offensive coordinator. Just my opinion. @Chris Coleman does a much better job of explaining his offensive style than I do. I just call it an Air Raid variation subset. ** Edited by MKD at 10/10/2025, 5:36:04 PM

I just think about how I yell at the tv for Drones mistakes
and CPM must be silently yelling in his head for 5 other mistakes that I'm not even aware of. And that's just for the QB position. He is very much in a tough spot and doing a fantastic job of putting on a positive face and pushing forward with the players that he inherited (and likely some of them he would have replaced last offseason if he had been the head coach). This whole year is a throwaway year because we could realistically have 50-80% new players and 90% new staff next year.

Once the season started I felt bad for him & Sefkis
The season showed itself to be lost in the second half of the Vandy game. If we’re honest, the second quarter. Monty and Sefkis never had a chance.

I completely agree. The guy wasnt even in Blacksburg last season.
To expect him to magically fix the program in the middle of the season when he hasn't even been with the team for a full season is insane. I doubt Nick Saban himself could cobble together a winning record with this team if dropped into the same situation. I'm not suggesting Montgomery should be the permanent head coach, but to pin any blame on him for not correcting the plethora of problems that have plagued the program for over a decade is simply unreasonable, in my opinion.
