Time to come to terms with how far VT has fallen. In 2016, might have even been 2 or 3 on this same list, but in 2025 #4 is fan fiction. After 5 years of knee capping the guy who was pointing out the problems and then 3.5 years of bumbling incompetence, VT is not a desirable job and will become less so as more positions open up.
The reorg, new AD, and new money better be good or this cycle will continue. See also Nebraska.

Easier to get to the top in acc and great fan support are just 2 of the reasons they say is a good job

But they both failed and the program got pulled further and further backwards. Not sure why that matters now if I’m a coach interested in being successful when it’s been inconsequential for 15 years.

While Fuente had his short comings, he could coach so much better than Pry.
Fuente's larger problem wad a lack of promised funding and having the rug continuously pulled out from under him by John Ballein.
Pry, on the other had couldn't coach and had no idea how to be a HC.
We would never have been 10 & playing in the ACCCG like we were in Fuente's 1st year.

VT is flailing. Not a good look if you are hiring someone to fill that job.

those with easy conference and great fanbase and it should be attractive to coaches.

Whoever it is acting in part on faith in that plan but if I’m looking at recent history I’d have a lot of questions that would have to be answered before I’d commit. Questions that 5 of those schools wouldn’t likely be asked.

Quiet competence that nobody is talking about.

Fu/Pry were correct that more resources were needed BUT that's not an excuse for losing as much as they did. If resources are everything, explain our losses to less programs (ODU, Marshall, Liberty) as well as not great wins against them too

significantly more resources and support than Fuente. Pry performed no better and some might say he performed worse. Resources are a solution ONLY for those with the ability and intelligence to effectively use them as Texas and A&M have demonstrated time and again.

Fu went sideways relative to where he took over: annual bowl and beating UVA but only the initial ACCCG appearance and nothing else. Had a flicker of hope in 2019 but COVID ended that.
Pry took more resources and did worse with 3 out of 4 losing seasons, missing bowls twice, beat UVA twice but probably would’ve lost this year. Only showed progress in 1 year but couldn’t follow thru once coordinators had an off season to figure him out. This isn’t even close.

as the original point. However, the post I responded to seemed to imply that the complaints about needing more resources were equivalent between Pry and CJF and I do not believe that to be true. My response clarified that belief as well as made the point that resources are a tool only as useful as the person using them
I agree the job, with additional resources, can be attractive. However, resources are just one component, albeit a significant one. I would imagine candidates will evaluate. They will also evaluate structures, leadership and other things, some of which might not be considered attractive, or at least a question mark at present.

That’s not exactly a parade of intellectual giants. It’s been a decade plus of atrophy and there’s a price to pay for that. Feel free to be in denial and agree with the clapping seals though.

The extreme dysfunction of that administration and atheletic dept should put it near the bottom. You can't have a sentence like that and then put VT at #4 saying "the program can tout the athletics department’s renewed financial commitment". One repels coaches, the other attracts them
I'm fine with Penn State being #1 and Arkansas #2 since its SEC

How can you compete with the best of big 10/pac 12 with no money? You are asking to get fired soon at this point

may not be willing to tap into it. Given that the Big East Football Conference kicked Temple out, ADs have to be mindful of that and make sure they don't completely seal the vault if you will. Also, CA may have state laws that other Big Ten schools, including USC, may not have to deal with at the moment. Given all the dust that is being kicked up by NIL, the P2 shift, and other stuff going on, it wouldn't surprise me if UCLA is slow playing the situation until a few more things play out. Basically, it comes down to would a HC rather have potential access to a bank located in Luxembourg or Georgia (the country)?

Both UCLA and VT have very differing strengths and weaknesses which roughly equal out on paper - but again, could fall one way or the other depending upon what a potential coach is looking for.
Nevertheless, these lists are inherently moronic - and at this stage of the game also way premature given that, say, Florida, FSU, Wisconsin, Auburn, etc could easily jump into the mix.
