So, how does K Drones 17 tds, 3 ints last season compare nationally? And
add in over 800 yds rushing. Seems top-notch to me! ** Edited by Hokie PE at 2/22/2024, 5:04:21 PM

Drones wouldn't have come here for FuCorn, so it would not matter how many
years late, Fu's dreams would be dry...

Pretty good in terms of efficiency. Really like that 3 pick number.
It means he makes pretty darn good decisions in the passing game. If he starts the season anywhere close to how he finished, his passing TD numbers will go up significantly...probably double.

Well, Bo Nix who didn’t win the Heisman
Had the same number of rushing TDs (5) and the same number of INT(3) but had about double the passing yards and a few more TD passes (45 compared to 17). Drones had a good season and is poised for a breakout season. But it wasn’t close to elite at the national level. ** Edited by Pride_and_Joy at 2/22/2024, 5:57:58 PM

I'd be interested to see which VT QB over past 30 yrs did rank as top 25
I bet there's only a handful and some would be really close. Druck, MiVick, Randall, TT, Logan Thomas, Jerod Evans and maybe MaVick and Brewer....MAYbe. Doing a quick run through of old rosters surprised me how quick time flies. Guys that played 20 yrs ago seem like it was just a few. We've been very mediocre for nearly a decade.

VT winning in Columbus was almost 10 years ago. Lordy.

50 years- Don Strock🏈
Saw him set the ncaa single game record at that time- over 500 yards 🏈 He was a true gunslinger!

Yep. He was the real deal.

Totally agree.

He was ranked 66th nationally in QBr
Of course he didn’t have the benefit of playing a full season. He’ll be a solid QB for the Hokies. His 17 td to 3 int ratio is good. In rankings, he was just behind sr Louisville qb jack plummer. Colorado QB Shadeur Sanders is ranked 57th. Drones was sacked 21 times. That was a problem. He also had bad outings against Florida state and Louisville. Tulane was also a bad passing game due to the rain. But if he could regularly play as he did in the final three games of the regular season, we’d be good. Drones wasn’t a top 50 QB last year. But with the offseason, Drones should easily be a top 50 QB ** Edited by Hokie1992 at 2/23/2024, 8:39:04 AM

QBR doesn’t measure ability to complement passing with running….
Drones is a top 50 easy when you add in dual threat
H
Hokie1992
Actually it does
It’s a proprietary ESPN stat that tracks all of the QBs contributions including passing, rushing, turnovers and penalties.
87Hokie87 87Hokie87
ESPN stats rate Drones as the 54th most “efficient” qb rushing
While he finished 5th in the nation in rushing for a QB….the efficiency stat for rushing is flawed…..Drones rushing is a difference maker….

Not sure I am a fan of the “QBR” methodology
Looking at the QBR rankings: Anthony Collandrea- UVA was 34th- he threw 13 tds and 9 picks, less yards but 4% higher completion pct and yet he’s twice as good as Drones. Really? Who would you rather have as your Qb? Brennan Armstrong NC State was 42nd - he played well against us but he got benched earlier in the year because of how bad their offense was and only got his job back because the freshman starter decided to transfer Not saying there isn’t room for improvement but Drones was very good last year, especially based on the preseason noise that he had limited passing ability. In my opinion he’s a lot better than some of those guys higher on that list.

"But with the offseason, Drones should easily be a top 50 QB"
I hope you're right. The problem is our OC coach does not have QB experience unless CP plans to hire a QB consultant during the off season
Chris Coleman Chris Coleman
We already have one of those. Brian Crist.

maybe CP can lure Steve Clarkson to VT for a yr

The good news is drones is a developed QB
He doesn’t need his motion or his feet fixed. Bowen recruited Drones. I do t worry a bit about needing a QB mechanic on the coaching staff. I’m guessing drones was the guy Bowen was looking for and I look forward to how they progress with a full off season of preparation
P
Pride_and_Joy
According to that old OS, Windows NT, Drones’ mechanics are poor.
I don’t see that. He was an Elite 11 QB and played well in his first real time as a starter. I’m not sure why we wouldn’t expect him to progress with an entire offseason in a system built around him and with the time to build chemistry with the receivers.
H
HokiesACC2004
You saw glimpses of it needing work earlier in the year
But as the season went on, he got much better. Comes with PT.
P
Pride_and_Joy
It's almost like you don't watch the games
Imagine a full offseason as QB1. Working on timing and chemistry with your core receivers. Imagine an entire off season to design the offense around Drones. They made changes on the fly in the middle of the season to build arond KD. He is poised for a breakout season, to be sure.

he has poor throwing mechanics, ave reading defenses, ave pocket awareness
he can mask those deficiencies with his athleticism, but that can only go so far apparently you have never thrown a football before ** Edited by Windows NT at 2/23/2024, 4:14:06 PM ** Edited by Windows NT at 2/23/2024, 4:16:46 PM

Please enlighten. What’s wrong with his mechanics?
What evidence is there that he’s average at reading defenses? He has a great arm, throws a good deep ball, is an excellent decision maker, and is a tremendous competitor. Would love to know the flaws in his mechanics and evidence he isn’t very good at reading defenses. ** Edited by Pride_and_Joy at 2/23/2024, 6:09:47 PM

What? He did a fantastic job in one spring and season with a new raw QB,
new WR group, new RB, and new TEs. I get the concern when it was going into last off-season. However, he's thus far proven that he can bring a young raw QB along, adapt to strengths/weaknesses, and scheme to attack opposing defenses. Based off what he accomplished last year, he is easily the best OC we have had here since Kevin Rogers. Even though we have a physically limited offensive line, we were a pretty hard team to defend as we could put push a lot of different pressure points to expose a defense. Now, do we need to see that trajectory continue? Absolutely! But no need to throw shade. ** Edited by goodbadugly at 2/23/2024, 12:45:18 PM
