CC's article troubling to me...
Pry's comments really make you feel like his "plan" for the VT offense was kinda half baked.
Many of us wondered how wise it was to hire an inexperienced OC. Benefit of the doubt said Pry knows this guy from PSU, so...he must know.
To hear Pry publicly questioning personnel and scheme sound like he tagged this guy to run the O, and has been pretty much hands off every since. Using the word "vanilla" does sound like fan-speak. It sounds like a term used by those not privy to the sausage making process. What's Pry's level of involvement with the offense?
This has OFTEN been the knock on defensive coordinators as head coaches, giving total control of the most complex phase of the game (and in 2022 college football most important) to someone else without the understanding of what works and what doesn't.
Again, my interpretation of CC's article might be too much of a reach just yet, but there's definitely some red flags here in my opinion.

Both the offense AND defense have looked like they been playing a spring game all season long - with only some VERY modest changes in the last couple of weeks.
As much as the football has been bad - with frankly, little indication of a light at the end of the tunnel - it’s also been exceedingly boring.

....that this "vanilla" offense was an attempt to simplify things, and focus on culture....somehow. So, there was a legit question whether there was a method to the madness or not. We didn't know
..but when you hear the HC come out and call his own offense "vanilla", that suggests he and the OC aren't on the same page, and that's a different kind of red flag.
We all know it will take time to rebuild the talent level, but if you don't have the right guys in place, there is no rebuild.

We want to be a ball control offense that pounds the running game, uses play action, and gets the ball to playmakers who can get extra yards in space (a classic approach that works well with great talent).
But as he said, we have proven that we are not that team this year. We can't just line up and have our guys beat theirs. So we will need to use creative schemes and play calls to mask our weaknesses. The risk is that if we don't execute, we could have more 3 and outs and create an even worse situation for our Defense.
I expect we might see some new sets and a different flavor of offense next game to get things moving. I don't think we are going full mint choc chip, but we could see some vanilla bean with mint chips.

anything to do with the offensive side of the ball, so I believe your interpretation is correct.
He also gets credit for 'saying all the right things' when in actuality what he is doing is just telling people what he thinks they want to hear. He's been doing that pretty much from his interview up through the present. To me, it is a cautionary tale about believing someone 'gets it' or 'is one of us' and thinking that means squat out on the field. Hopefully he's going to figure things out very, very quickly. I'm skeptical.

Mental health you may want to skip the next few years. Of course several of the other teams that made complete coaching staff changes are struggling also. May not be just a VT thing

All of Wells attempts are short/intermediate passes. There are very few deep ball attempts to try and get a quick and easy score. The running game is bland - most runs are between the tackles. VT is not making defenses defend the entire field. They are easy to stop.

getting RBs to the sideline. We simply don't do anything other than run between the tackles. If a RB gets "outside" it is not because of design.

I'd bet a lot of first year HC's feel this way too but would never admit it and just dish out bland coach-speak instead.

Finally seeing a little bit of fire and it’s about time a head coach holds himself and his staff as accountable as they seem to hold the players. It’s not all about perfect execution with a bunch of young adults.
To me Pry it’s saying all the right things, thinking about and focused on the right things, etc.
The real question now is can he execute on those things? Will he make the needed changes unlike staffs before him?
We shall see. But I like him and where his heads at, and find his transparency refreshing. He seems to have a good sense of things, good pulse on it all, and what everyone is thinking and frustrated about. He seems to take full accountability for it ALL and I will take that as a starting point all day long.
Agree he’s absolutely still learning, and I think he needs to be a bit more involved in certain areas/certain ways. I do believe he will get there.
Again, we shall see.

finally sunk in that he was the VT head coach. Pry has been a bit over his skis for a while but he seems to be growing into the job. Hopefully he continues to grow and becomes the coach we all want him to be. The fact he said something is good. FU couldn’t see his OC was his weakness and it cost him his job.

And start over again…… or patience. Ask any number of teams how well firing coaches constantly works for them. Never mind it takes big dollars to do all the buyouts and start again with new ones

1) This is a VT football discussion board
2) A discussion board is where people talk about VT football
3) The VT football offense is struggling big time
4) People (and TSL staff) are discussing what the cause of that is.
5) Most people agree that talent is an obvious contributing factor
6) Recent comments by the head coach suggest coaching also being a possible contributing factor, pointed out by TSL.
7) If coaching is deficient, that can complicate the rebuild process, and fans would like to know about that.
If you feel triggered by any of those things, or do not want to know any of those things, you should spend your time elsewhere, because people are going to be talking ALOT about VT football on the VT football discussion board. You will find out things here you might not want to know.
Nobody is calling for any firings. I suggest you relax.

I don’t think he’s happy with his OC running our backs into brick walls over and over. I think there’s a disconnect between OL coach, and the OC and the qb coach too.
