This team doesn’t equal the sum of its parts

It looks like a different team every game, but not in a good way.

Get it done with this group. Team lacks toughness, grit, intensity, want-to. Just a collection of talented dudes, most of whom don’t play much D. MY does not seem to hold guys accountable for defensive lapses, that is for sure.

For a VT basketball team playing for its 20th win in the regular season
The entitlement in the fan base in the face of 105 years of mediocre basketball is impressive

coming into the season, this team has been consistently competitive, especially in league play all season. THE FSU "Unicorn" game is the only real head scratcher outcome we had during the ACC schedule. Which makes those last second losses hurt even more because they truly are the difference between the NCAAs & the NIT.
Obviously, the coaches have had the team scouted & prepared every game. It feels like a season of "what could have been", but I've enjoyed the effort and the ride regardless.

MY will have been responsible for 20% of those seasons despite coaching 35% of the years.
The ACC for the last 5 seasons is the weakest it’s ever been, total conference win % has been under .580 every year he’s coached here except this year and 2019. The last time the ACC win % was that low prior is actually never, it’s only been below .600 five times in the history of the conference.
MY is a good recruiter, he’s brought in a similar level of talent as his predecessors yet has underperformed them in against a much weaker conference.
The numbers don’t lie

So, I say a record of 15-7 (9-4), and making the Big Dance during that shortened season, winning more than 2/3, would qualify, as 20 wins would be out of at least 30 games, normally, or winning about 2/3 games. I therefore see that stat as somewhat inaccurate.

The games that got cancelled were at UVA, FSU, BC, NCSU, Louisville 2x, and UNC.
Given we lost to Louisville and UNC that year, FSU was a top team, and UVA was ranked away, we’d probably only win 2-3 of them.

If he misses it with a team he himself said is the most talented he’s had, losing games in the manner we have, it falls on him. He has to win away at our biggest rival in our toughest game of the year to do so, it should never have gotten to this point.
Talent isn’t the excuse it’s been in the past, it’s pretty apparent mental mistakes have resulted in 2 losses that should have never happened and a larger number of seemingly safe leads almost blown.

That we expected to only win 10 games. And even what we saw at times this year was the potential to be a really really good team.
Yet here we are, once again on the wrong side of the bubble and without making a deep run in the ACC Tournament in addition to beating UVA on the road, we will miss the NCAAT yet again.
I don't think most of us, after hearing about us "buying" better players....in addition to "a first round and potential lottery draft pick from Europe" will be satisfied with "20 wins" if we are yet again watching the NCAAT and hoping for maybe a home NIT game.
Some might even call that "mediocre". But I guess some will simply say (if we get there...and that's a big if) "Wow, 20 wins! What a great season!"

Than considering this a successful season given the expectations.
I'm not a fire Young guy at all. But I'm also not considering this a good season....even with 19 wins and an NIT birth.
