He needed to maintain position between the SMU player and the basket so he couldn’t advance the ball so easily. That should’ve been a 70-foot shot, not a 50-foot shot.

can assess the additional risk? He started between Miller and the basket and Miller sprinted cross court to get the ball. If Hammond tries to cut him off he might get called for a block. Or if Hammond is running full speed. Miller cuts the other way and gets a more open look from the middle instead of the side.

time. That’s not contested. Letting someones best player run uncontested to half court for a wide open shot while you run behind them is not doing your job.

You arent denying anyone the ball because then you'll just throw it over the top to the same player further up the floor
They spread the floor out so much that secondary defenders was not an option
You want him to catch the ball facing his own baseline and in front of you
That's what happened
He just hit a shot from behind half court
