I have no expectations about this team
If they’re “in” or on the bubble by mid February I’ll be happy but I’m not expecting it

I expect them to be better than last year.

Sorry, YBY, no way.. This will be CMY's worse team since his 1st.

Woah, I just saw the Miller news. Another one bites the dust.

Last year's team was .500 in the ACC. That's not easy.

With Miller, I thought we could be around 10th in acc. Now, might be last

What happened to Miller?

That won't be the case

Do we have an ACC caliber PG?

We had one in Sean P., this board "ran him off!"

I know the sentiment around the question...
But you don't get the play in the ACC without being an ACC level PG (unless your program is going through the death penalty or something) Brandon Rechsteiner was a 4-star PG. He has a year in the system. By some accounts he was ahead of Miller whether he gambled or not. It is a good thing for your returning PG to have experience in this system. If his overall talent level is lower than Miller (I'm not certain it is) then that experience can close the gap. Where Miller hurts is those depth pieces. He could also play off the ball, so it hurts both PG and Wing depth. Schutt, Johnson and Brown will need to be quick learners. Young will need to improve his awareness of where to be and when. They all have the talent to be more than fine in those spots. Hammond is someone I really like and think he has a high floor even if a low ceiling. I felt like it was difficult to imagine him going somewhere and sitting, and that's why many felt Rhode Island was a good spot. He is talented enough to play. But will he pick up everything else? TBD Tennessee wanted Hammond when VT did. I have to think VT went hard after Hammond when they did because of the risk with Miller. I can assure you they weren't blindsided with this recently. Miller also hurts in that you commit NIL resources to him that could have gone elsewhere. Does VT keep Ivy Curry if they gave him Miller's money? Do they WANT to keep Ivy-Curry? You try and get the best players possible for your program, but many times that means you deal with a little more uncertainty than you'd like at a program like VT. To answer the question in the spirit of the question. Yes, Rechsteiner is an ACC level PG. Hammond has the talent to be an ACC level PG, but I can't tell you whether he will be able to use that talent because I haven't seen him practice or play. If he picks things up, he could be very good. If he doesn't, he could be a taller Hank Thorns. There's just no way (for me) to know.

Thanks GC. What were Rech’s issues last year? To my untrained eye he sure
seemed to have significant ball security issues.

Plenty of freshman can bring the ball up against pressure

Plenty?

Sure. And we certainly hope Hammond can
Hopefully Brech steps up but many expected Miller would be a 30 minute per game guy and Brech would develop. He didn't show much, if any, improvement last year. Maybe there was an injury but we were playing Collins and Hunter there last year because he was often not a viable backup. With freshmen, you want to see flashes to give hope for the future. That gives confidence that the ability is there, just need the experience. Not alot of flashes last year. Rooting hard for him though. We need him. ** Edited by hokietom87 at 10/23/2024, 5:10:02 PM

You know there's no chemistry? How did you come about that info.???

Now there's no Hysier Miller to boot.

Honestly you should never have expectations of any team going forward.
With NIL and transfer portal, every year you are going to have a ton of new players/starters who have not developed chemistry. Quality of team play is going to go down and so is consistency.

If we have 5 or fewer losses before Duke game, I'll be good
It's impossible to have any expectations beyond just beating the smaller conference schools on our early schedule. It's weird to literally have no clue what this team will be like. But at least CMY has experience with that based on his first year here at VT.

today I read where Sports Illustrated picked us to come in last!
The highest I have seen us is 13 out of 18 teams. So, no one has us having much of a season and I get that with so many unknows and now Miller apparently not playing. A lot of unproven players have to reach their potential for us to success. I think we will surprise people but of course I am wearing orange and maroon glasses.

SI couldn't pick the winner of the 1968 Super Bowl in 2024. How that pile
of bovine feces still exists is beyond words.

I think the talent is there. The question is if CMY can mold all these new
players into an NCAA team in one season, which IMO is a tall order. For that reason I have no expectations going into the season. I might change my mind when we get a few games into January.

I wouldn't try and predict NCAA, NIT or stay home before I saw the first
8-10 games. Just too many possibilities and variabilities.
