Tyler Nickel's transfer considered one of the ACC's best
Tyler Nickel's transfer considered one of the ACC's best 247Sports looked at the Top 10 interconference transfers across the ACC in men's basketball and named former North Carolina transfer Tyler Nickel No. 8. Nickel announced his transfer to Virginia Tech on March 30. "Nickel appeared in 25 games during UNC's 2022-23 season, averaging 2.1 points and 0.6 rebounds per game. He shot 37.5% from the field and 22.2% from 3-point range. He scored a career-high 16 points against The Citadel on Dec. 13, 2022. In UNC's 22 games that followed, Nickel logged a total of 76 minutes and scored 18 combined points. "Nickel notched eight points and two rebounds in 25 minutes at Virginia Tech on Dec. 4. He returns home to the state of Virginia, where he is the all-time leading scorer at the high school level." Nickel, the all-time leading scorer in the state of Virginia, played high school basketball at East Rockingham in Elkton, Virginia which is located about 2 hours from Blacksburg. Tyler was voted as the 2022 Virginia Player of the Year after averaging 35 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 assists per game as a senior and was a first-team all state player all four years of his high school career. 247Sports Evaluation: "Has adequate length for a combo forward. Is well built with a physical strength edge to his game a high level shooting touch. Not an explosive athlete but can make plays and draw fouls in contact with his physical strength and aggressive mindset. Can post up and has an array of turn around fade away shots. More importantly for the next level, he is a marksman from behind the line. Is developing deep range. Loves to fire moving to his left. Steady ball handler who can find the open man. Not the type to break defenders down with the dribble. Positional rebounder. Defending is an area of concern." - Jerry Meyer

I don’t see that. Words have meaning & while it may not be critically
Important here, it’s nice to know the difference between the two words. One day if could be important.

#8 Interconf is a big deal. #8 intra in a 15 team conf? Not nearly as much.

Yeah looks like they consider it #8 among interconference Acc transfers
but how many guys transferred from one acc school to another? Can't be many more than 10, he is 8th.

Everything from that 247Sports Evaluation screams....
HE FITS MIKE YOUNG'S SYSTEM PERFECTLY and PROTOTYPE MIKE YOUNG PLAYER Just need to have some patience as he develops, particularly on defense. ** Edited by vtbball80 at 5/14/2023, 2:51:26 PM

Yeah, that last sentence didn't sit well
Defending is an area of concern. EGAD! Defense is half the game. Eh, I'll still take him.

If he didn’t have some weaknesses, he wouldn’t be coming here

Given time to properly develop I don’t think his defense will
be much of an issue, unless he’s forced to play before he’s ready because of injuries. ** Edited by NC Hoke at 5/15/2023, 3:37:41 AM

I’m pedestrian w my bball knowledge, but per GC
MYs system is sort of a team defensive style so it can accommodate defensive issues. Just passing along info from a wise man.

I would argue that you could say that about most Fr…..
Doesn’t worry me - at least not yet. I do like that he and Collins being different strengths to the table for situational substitutions.
