I like Buzz. Gives me a reason to root for his team.

of an odd mercenary, but there is NO WAY I'm rooting for Michigan over them.
Although, I really do like Michigan's coach. He did an amazing job at FAU - should have made the title game. It was a shame that he went to Michigan. They are so douchey and make me want to vomit.
You could even say Michigan is the Midwestern blend of Duke/UNC which is just even worse. Loser, computer lab geeks taunting the other team. In real life they'd get slapped around by a middle schooler or senior citizen.

They do stuff that's weird even by the standards of big academia.

Don’t get the hate for him here.
Took a job that was better-resourced

taking the TAMU job. It’s more the fact that everything seemed to be about Buzz. VT was simply a minor character or background to the Buzz Williams show. And for many people that’s exactly what it was, a show. Many of the things he said and did came across as disingenuous or performative. He also didn’t care about building a foundation for the program. He built one team, rode it as far as he could and then bolted. He also used up all the recruiting visits and apparently committed violations. So yeah plenty of reasons beyond he took a better job.

immediate personal success somewhere else. "For an extended time," he was paid by VT while his actions, despite having immediate on court success, were hurting VT long term.
People defend him by saying that he won and enhanced VT's reputation, but that was just a derivative of building his own brand.

Head Coach. Obviously can coach and never met a rule he wouldn't break. Hope Texas doesn't hire him.

we were recruiting Allen when he was at Oak Hill..Buzz went to one game and got in the opponents line at the end of the game to shake Coach Smith's hand and Allen's hand. When Coach Smith's first grandchild was born, Buzz sent his daughter a childrens's book and inscribed it with:" when she grows a little, have her grandpa read this to her!" I did not like how he left VT, but we knew if one of the Texas teams came calling, he would be gone. I have always been impressed with him. Remember him telling our players how they would stand for the National Anthem?

as performative and phony to me. Then again most things Buzz did came across that way. And of course it was apparent from his first day that he was looking for a bigger job. Pretty much every season we had to deal with him being interested in an opening. Then you have the fact that he used all our recruiting visits prior to leaving. Then there are the apparent recruiting violations. Add those all up and I feel even more confident in my initial impression.

a kid he was recruiting from the other school. Coach Smith was the one telling me the story, so maybe I am remembering wrong

a few years, I might have the wrong name. I just looked in my Oak Hill book, but since he transferred to another prep school, he is not listed. Carmello was my first year officiating at Oak Hill

I don't have any doubt Buzz did something like that because both are NCAA violations, just couldn't wrap my head around it being Seth Allen
Khadim Sy maybe?

email me after games. I never got him to tell me what happened that he transferred. His last game at Oak Hill..he and rodney Roberts(Miami) were talking with me and I told them " 'dim you are going to Tech..Rodney, I wanted you to go to Tech. Guess who is going to foul out tongiht! Within 1 minute of the start, Rodney fouled. He looked at me and said"damn, you were serious"

thought the world of him, Momo Jones was the Greenberg recruit that I remember most. His moma told Greenberg that if he wanted her son to sign with Vt, that we had to fly her down to Blacksburg and get her a job! Smith told Seth that Nike would fly her down. Greenberg said, "if the bi...is that crazy, let her stay" I always wondered what he got to go to UNLV!
