Stanford pitcher throws 156 pitches last night. That coach only cares
about 1 thing. That’s a shame!

Not like he does it on a regular basis

Being a pitcher I can tell you that pitch count is overrated
What matters is the type of pitches you throw..if you throw all curve balls and sliders that will lead you into TJ surgery if you throw too much.. fastballs a different deal as ni twisting arm motion…
Recall that pitch count only came into play in the last 5 years or so and ONLY at the MLB level where you pitch every 4 days for 7 months ..college is like 60 games max

almost all college pitching coaches are very concerned about pitch count. Maybe to protect arms, or maybe for recruiting (if a coach gets a reputation of overworking pitchers, good recruits will stay away).

It’s really not the *huge* deal people are making it out to be. All of it was certainly done with his permission. The coach(es) asked him in between each inning if he was good to go. Obviously, the pitcher said yes. He and his friends get to play another day and have a shot at the CWS.
He was happy once the game ended in his postgame interview - and said he was glad he did it.

156 is excessive. Anything more than 120-130 is scary IMO

Obviously more is harder on the body, but why those thresholds?

Of course there’s no hard & fast number as people differ but getting above 120-130 in one day is so hard on UCL

He’s probably not going to be a future prospect in terms of playing in the Majors. He could get drafted again, sure. But he was a 19th rounder as a junior last year. If a team is taking you in the 19th round as a college player, they probably see you as someone that’ll pitch in the minors for a little while then move on. Not saying that’s the case for everyone, but it’s not like he was pitching with millions of dollars on the line.
Besides, he said he was okay with it. He wanted to win. That’s what happened.
I get it, 156 pitches is a lot for anyone. If he’s pitching for millions, then I’d take issue with it. But he’s probably playing in his last “World Series” type outing of his life.

it should be a consideration as to when a pitcher next throws (for both effectiveness and possible injury) but in itself I don't think many guys injure their selves just because they are throwing pitch number "X".

The pitching motion is very damaging to multiple parts of the arm and shoulder. The muscles get torn up pretty bad, thus the graduated requirements for rest based on how much you throw. The damage gets worth with every pitch. Continuing to throw after the muscles are that torn up will cause serious damage. It's different for everyone but there is a reason MLB pitchers rarely if ever pitch past 110 pitches, and they are grown men who have received the best training and prep there is.
150 is insane. The damage done likely won't show up immediately, but it's likely it won't heal before he throws again, and continue to get worse until he has a major injury.

He wasn't the same pitcher for about a year.......

If this becmes the norm, other coaches will use this against him in recruiting of pitchers, and no good pitcher will choose Stanford. Good pitchers want to go to the next level, and overwork just kills arms.

I remember he had a CG no-hitter in regionals with a very high pitch count. Possibly lead to over inflated value, sat out a year after not signing with initial team that drafted him and just googled him, announced last month tore UCL and out for a year or more.
