I am pinching myself that things have come together for Virginia Tech Football and Sports in General!! First we have Metallica in Lane Stadium. Then we fire the last under qualified head coach to ever coach VT football. Then we hear VT is making a HUGE budget increase from Whit Babcock. Then we watch as the new budget is approved. (Cudos to Whit for getting this Done) Then we watch VT Mens / Womens basketball take steps forward. Now we watch as VT secures a contract with a top top football coach. Soon we watch VT suck up Recruits from Virginia, NC, Pennsylvania, Maryland, etc etc etc. OH MY GOODNESS...Mr Franklin did his homework here. He Knows what all Hokies know. We have the budget, we have the conference, we have the recruits, and we have the FANBASE. Welcome James Franklin.......Hokies......Start Jumping. Ancient Hokie Proverb: Hokie Football will Always Rank....When led by a coach who's name contains Frank. Here's a thought.....If Whit had not gotten approval for Budget Jump....... Let me explain. James has two college bound daughters. James has endured 11 years of Pennsylvania winters. He is 53 years old. He has struggled with recruiting from southern states due to the harsh cold weather in Pennsylvania. There are articles where he describes the difficulties of recruiting to a colder climate. Considering his family has endured 11 Pennsylvania winters, where the most recent winter was worse than normal, considering he is on the record with struggling with recruits due to cold climate, considering his daughters are about to go to college, where they could literally attend at any state in the country.....My guess is, he will take a warm-climate job. Florida Gators.....UCLA....or some other Southern State. He wants to win a championship next, and i'm sure he is thinking....the recruiting lift from a warm climate will give me an edge. Having fallen short at Penn State, he is looking for a job where he can close the deal, and this recruiting lift will appeal to his "process" and logical thinking at his next job. Don't forget, his wife is probably ready for warmer weather too! So Hokie fans....it's time to strike him off the list. It's not that the VT job or money is not good enough, it's just the wrong timing for Franklin in his career. The VT job in itself will have to Entice someone willing to Endure the Blacksburg climate. It is what it is. That said, there are plenty of candidates that would be a good fit, but none of these candidates should include grown up kids and an age already in the 50's. Think "wholesome" small town environment, where the coach's family can raise younger kids in a "safe small town environment". I'm thinking early-mid 40's with wife and kids under 12. So that's enough with the "James Franklin" talk. And any other coach in his 50's most likely. Factor that in. GO HOKIES!!!

That is where the rubber hits the road. In order by Money Paid out. #1 Defensive Coordinator, we need a guy that can make VT a Defensive Machine. (Key to VT success, and if he is good, we can afford to keep him. ) (Think Brent venables type but not interested in head coaching job) (Shhhhh...He was one of the main reasons for Clemson's Run) #2 Offensive Coordinator, we need a guy that is Offensive genius and QB Whisperer. #3 Offensive Line Coach, we need proven guy that attracts the Big Guys. #4 QB Coach, another GURU that helps VT attract high caliber QBs. Best money spent in college football, if you find the right guy, someone that loves defense, and is happing just coaching the best defense in college football.

I have been thinking about this a lot. Ready........here we go! step 1. Hire Head coach Young, familiar with area, successful winning record, Energetic, QB developer, proven offense, program builder. Pay him a strong market driven salary with contractual incentives. step 2. Hire one of the best Defensive coordinator in college football not wanting to be a head coach. (Ahh, the secret to my formula) His salary will be very high, second only to the head coach. We need to spend a lot of money for him and his staff of assistants. VT was build on tough defense, it's time to get back to that once and for all. step 3. Hire Offensive coordinator (pay them above average) to get good coordinator / assistants that mesh well with head coach. step 4. Hire a QB coach that meshes well with Offensive coordinator AND head coach. WE need to spend money here. step 5. Do what's necessary to have a great special teams coordinator and staff. My point is, if we build VT back into the best defense in ACC, that gives us an edge in every game. A top defensive coordinator will be the easiest coach to keep, as they usually don't migrate to head coach. WE probably have the resources to compete with other schools for retaining him. You want a top offense? Have them practice against a top defense all day long! On offense, Hiring a young offensive minded QB whisperer, with a known Offensive coordinator that meshes with head coach that also is a QB whisperer, and have those two hire a QB coach and SPEND some money......... Add to that a special teams is an asset every time it's on the field, that helps win games. What does that get us you ask??? Well, it gets us back to our roots for starters. We have a ROCK SOLID defense, a special teams that is exciting, and an offense with good minds working together with proper paychecks that makes QB recruits drool. One of the things I loved about VT football back in the day was, there was NEVER a dull moment. I would hope like hell on offense, savor our defense coming on the field, and be excited to see what special teams was going to do. Let's get VT back to kicking ASS in games. He had the talent. With last year's talent, a seasoned and dialed on qb, and a coach that knew what to do...... We would have been at a level Hokie Nation expected, at the top of the ACC.

I hear people mentioning these people like Beamer JR, Brian Kelly, James Franklin. All we need is a really sharp young guy with offensive expertise that has a strong winning track record on his resume. If we start throwing around money, don't get me wrong, we will reel in a big name, but it won't be good for VT. We need a young guy who wants to be at VT and wants to rebuild VT and is totally committed to the process. The extra money we now have is beneficial for supporting the program and the players and the supporting staff.....NOT a crazy head coach salary. The head coach should be paid market value and the contract should be smart and incentivised. Anything else will yield subpar results I believe. GO HOKIES!!!

Well listen, just let me say.......ummm Bobby, my buy out is 53 million right.....ummm Right, I was sayin, I can't possibly see myself coaching anywere else but LSU. I mean, if they fired me right now.....that would be TURRIBLE man. I just don't know what I would do if I had to walk away from LSU with a truck full of BIG OL BAGS OF CASH. I'm not even sure how many bags that would be. I mean, I'm worth what....56 million right now, but with another 53 million...Let's see...... This weekend (for those with your Hokie heads in the Sand) VT Picked up a big WIN over California. Well well well, as we pull up the data on California we find the following: California has beaten the following teams either directly or transitively in 2025..... To summarize, VT picked up wins (transitively this weekend against...... Oregon State (5-2) Minnesota Rutgers (Twice! - Paybacks are Hell) Purdue (Twice! - Paybacks are indeed Hell !) (5-2) Nebraska Cincinnati Bearcats Michigan State Boston college Twice! And North Carolina (which just barely lost in overtime to good ol' UVA) Point being......This team just beat some decently talented teams. VT may just be turning a corner here, despite a Hokie Fan base that has given up. VT is now 2-2 in the ACC and out of 17 teams, VT is currently Ranked 8th. VT is ranked ahead of Miami, Clemson, Florida State, and Stanford in ACC standings. Also, VT just beat California, who beat UNC, who just took UVA to overtime. The PHIL Montgomery version of the 2025 Hokies is playing with a chip on their shoulders. They have nothing to lose and a bowl game, an amazing story, and a UVA streak to play for. They were not affected by the coach they lost. They did not care that no one believed in them. They did not care that the team they were playing was 5-2. They did not care that their Hokie fans had given up on the season. They came out on that field and battled and believed and left the field with a hard-fought Hokie win. VT continues positive growth due to high quality kids and solid leadership from Phil. Drones passing improves and he gets some good runs off.

Those two working together to Pick the new GUY. WE need to start putting that in our head-coach contract. If you get Fired, your buyout becomes dependant on the success of your replacement that you have to pick, as a co-contractor with the guy fired before you. This is the way for VT to rise to the top. It's a self fulfilling way to have an ever improving head coach, (while limiting the buyout cost when we miss). GO HOKIES!!

The touch of death.

We used to build teams to compete by growing boys into Hokie Men, and compete with top talent teams. Now, no one has the patience to stick around anywhere and grow. Unless you can promise immediate success, top players flock to where the grass is surely greener. That said, if you get the right group of coaches together, that want to build something bigger than themselves, and get the kids to start believing in the program, maybe you can create something that is close to the VT of old. But is starts with a very smart guy that Wants to stick around at VT. Someone that is satisfied with the resources we have and our pathway to the college playoffs. One smart Head coach with a budget to pay top assistants and can truly rebuild the Hokie football program. One can only hope we find the right guy this time around. My points were instead about what we afford the next guy, and questioning how long it really takes to turn our program around. I'm concerned that the turnaround period is longer than where the Hoke fan base appetite wants to admit. Go Hokies!!

Tony Elliot went into 2025 with a UVA record of 11-23. Coach PRY went into 2025 with a VT record of 16-19. Imagine we open up season with a couple of cupcakes where we win 2 games and build confidence. Game 3 is a game with South Carolina, where a confident Hokies nudge out a win. Now PRY is sitting at 19-19, with new coordinators, and being 3-0 on the season. Would VT have had the patience for a year 4 with Elliot after watching 23 losses, including 3 back-to-back losses to VT? Now they are 6-1, have a legit shot at an ACC title, and a spot in the college football playoff. Not to mention they will most likely dispose of a struggling VT to end the regular season. How much of the success of a program like VT and UVA depends on patience? How long in this day in age does it really take to turn a program like ours around? Things to ponder as VT prepares to throw money at the problem, with a committee that allows the decision makers to dodge blame later. We need to find the right guy, that has youth, coaching smarts, and wants to stick around. I see the VT rebuild as a long term project rather than a quick fix, and Hokie Nation will have to be happy with gradual progress for at least a while. The funny thing is, as VT completely over-compensates (not that I'm complaining because some change was definitely needed) By creating an immense budget and a committee to oversee the selection process, the answer may be quite obvious. Why oh why have we missed on both choices so far? Well let's take a closer look..... #1 We needed the correct Personality to match the Hokie Culture. #2 We needed someone with head coach experience that has built a program successfully. Now we look at the last 2 fails...... Fuente - Had the head coach experience rebuilding a program but Missed on the Personality. (That said, Fuente would have still succeeded if he had proper funding and support) PRY - Had the personality to fit well with Hokie culture, but never filled head coach role and built a program. So do we need an extra 120 million in the budget and a committee now to make a good decision? Looking at someone like Chesney......he knows and loves the area, he understands the lay of the recruiting land, and he has successfully filled the role of a head coach and rebuilt a program. How hard is this really? Do we need a flashy name so we can start all over again in 3-5 years? Do we need a coach that treat's Blacksburg like a rung on a ladder? Do we need a big name so ESPN can talk about our coach but ignore our program? To me, this is a pretty easy decision when you have guys like Chesney. The problem is, you probably have a few good people like that, but the list grows short when you consider coaches that already have inroads with recruiting and more importantly, have roots in the area. A 3-4 year run followed by starting from scratch again is not what VT needs. We need to build a program with a guy that knows what he is doing and also wants to stick around. Ten Hokie coaches Ten Go in and one comes out Hokie Island decides

We start with one guy, who is above another guy. One or both or someone else (perhaps a wife or random fan) select 8 individuals who agree to form a committee to select a head football coach. Now these people will meet whenever they can to begin discussions about who to select. As they begin to create a list of people over time, of course, the list will have to be updated, as folks drop off the list that commit to other schools. Once this list is narrowed down, the one guy will weigh in on the decision as well as determine what if any input the other guy will have. If neither of the two guys like the choices, the committee will have to meet once again and spend more time updating their list based on availability and buy-in from other committee members. If one of the other two guys likes the candidates, than heated discussions may occur between the two guys and possibly other committee members. However, if all of the committee members can make a choice, and that choice is approved by both guys at the top, then they can check with the individual. If that individual is alarmed by the "process" that was used to make a coach selection, or indicates that he is not ready to commit, then the committee must continue meeting to find other candidates, and the process repeats again. As this ingenious process continues over time, other schools, offers, and pressure from the media may get involved, and people from the 8 person committee may decide they are no-longer interested in being within the process or the committee. Then the two guys must decide if they should hire replacement committee members, causing more confusion and frustration with the existing committee members still around. With enough media attention, the two guys at the top may cave to pressure and just select someone, with the possibility that the negative press about VT's inability to simply select a head coach, scares away any interest from any actual quality candidates. In the end, if this really goes sideways, the other guy may just pick another unknown and unproven football coach. As my wife says to me from time to time.....don't overcomplicate this. GO HOKIES

We hire 10 head coaches. 500k per coach. We put them on an televised island. We provide an unlimited supply of turkey legs and assault rifles. We allow the hokie fans to sponsor their coaches of choice with large donations Sponsored coaches get extra ammo and assistant coaches to help survive. Last coach standing gets picked up by the hokie bird in a chopper with any surviving assistants. Booom, easy. No committee needed. Go Hokies!!!!

I know that Phil knows what everybody else knows, and that is that this is his moment in the sun. If Phil puts together a Master Class Game plan, and has his players focused and determined to punch GT in the face, this would be a defining moment in that positively jolts his career, the season and his personal Stock. If Phil loses this game, then expectations on the season remain in the dumpster, his stock starts to slide, and his future begins to look like lateral moves rather than upward. Why just have one guy, have 10 head coaches, pay each headcoach 500,000 per year. Each game a different coach is on sideline, and we stuff the other 9 up in the box!

He thought about keeping it on the stand. Then he made a snap decision to open it and take a swig, and get it out of the way prior to speaking. He seems to make good snap decisions and is very business like. Water Bottle assessment was a B+. We will win games with Phil Montgomery, how many, I would guess 70%. Water Bottle regular season prediction: 6 wins and a Bowl Game. Gobble Gobble!!

He has taken an 0-3 team and produced a fanstastic Hokie-Football-like result on the field for two straight games despite the situation, distractions, loss of players, and shuffling of responsibilities. I can not say enough how impressed I am with Phil so far. Can't wait to see if this team continues to impress under his leadership. If it does, then I would hope he would be strongly considered for the position long term with other candidates. It's a good problem to have. GO HOKIES!!!

What type of witch-craft do you speak of?

Perhaps we can outsource our coaching staff to a foreign country, and use AI Bots to supply the ideas, play calls, manage practices, and provide answers. The off site staff could monitor the practices via video, teams meetings could be video chats, head coach could be a screen on the side of the field. Why hire anyone from the United States to run VT football program, just out source it, and leave the tough decisions to AI bots. Then spend the money we save on smart helmets and communication equipment. Give the rest to the players. Hell with the huge savings on salaries, players would flock to VT, as the player income would be quite competitive. Come to think of it, why have American football players at all? If we outsource the players, just think of the money we save in NIL payouts? And then, there is no need for electronics to coach remotely here in America. WE just have players out-sourced, coaching staffs out-sourced, the games could be over seas, and the players could just take classes online. Then we have the games all Pay-Per-View, or on cable package, sports betting (through the school? someone should look into this.) and then the schools rake in the TV dough while saving YUUGE amounts of money. That's an interesting concept, perhaps we should try that combination on the field.

You could measure the excitement (good or bad) with Fuente based on the number of water bottle krinkles per minute. Then Came PRY, and inexperienced coach, that abandoned the water bottle completely, showing his distrust and insecurity in confronting the press with anything at all, perhaps a red flag indeed. And now we have Whit, who not only brings a water bottle into the spot light, but has the audacity to sit it on an angled podium, where he then begins to read his notes and scribblings, with the occasional "rapid glance" upward to make eye contact with NO-ONE. And the result? The water bottle slowly slides off the angled podium and falls to the floor, where a nervous Whit stops his delivery and goes to pick it up off the floor.
