I am not belittling her. I am not verbally or emotionally abusing her, causing her mental anguish of self-esteem because of disrespect. I am arguing against the hero-worship, automatic assumption that she will be great this coming season, that she will automatically move into a starting role simply because of her high school accolades. I have provided largely rational reasons why, such as having 5 players in front of her all of whom have had significant playing time or starting roles that are not likely to change. Nelson and wenzel are going to play 30+ mins a game. Wells and suffren are likely to get their 15-20 mins a game. I have also given the caveat that it is possible that one of those 5 may not be here or we might bring in a transfer that might provide another barrier to playing time or that baker might get time at the three. We have also seem other freshman with accolades get limited time, so nothing is automatic. I have not precluded the potential for sears to contribute or make an impact. When it is time to preview next year’s team, she will be discussed as a guard who has the possibility of making an impact. But there are takes out there that assume she will automatically have a big impact and some of those takes don’t take into account the factors that can limit that potential. .

I bet it played a role, but the thing to keep in mind is that portal players come from all different backgrounds. The toughest part is getting them acclimated to what you want them to do in your program. Often times, players coming from bad teams were allowed to do just about whatever they wanted to do, and there was probably a lack of attention to detail or effort or consequence. So, you get players into your program who have sort of been in this "I can do whatever I'd like" mode and they've got to play good defense now, make the right decisions and have a coach that's tough on them like they haven't had in a while (or ever?). Some players respond immediately, some respond gradually, but some don't at all. My feeling was it was the latter for Swanson, who wasn't a great defender and, to be frank, didn't really add much value on either end of the court. Just didn't click for her.
