Carrico and Layne (UVa pitcher) were teammates at Appomattox. Would be
neat if they faced each other in April. BTW, my next-door neighbor was their coach and they have another ace supposedly headed to Radford next year.

HS softball is virtually meaningless (certainly the stats are). That said .
. . . softball athletes often hale frommore rural backgrounds than other athletes. Look at the best pitchers ever produced in Virginia. Many are from rural locations, Tincher, Ford, Good, Alexander, Lemley and others.

Going to grind you a bit Midlo - everyone of those pitchers had GREAT HS
stats...they had to be doing something right. I got to see and face (our team) - Tinch, Ford, Good, and Fleet (not mentioned but currently at JMU as co-#1) - you cant ignore the domination IMHO. I think the rural connection is two-fold: 1) they have less distractions then town/city girls, and 2) they have parents that are also less distracted and willing to grind with them...and find great coaching. Cheers!

I know Floyd County has a junior
That hit over .500 With 13 home runs (third most in the state of Virginia) as a sophomore. And she is currently committed to Radford

Virginia is an under rated softball state. For a while one could claim
That the middle classification had the most talent. The Valley District here in the Shenandoah Valley sure put out a lot of very good players.

Taught with
him. His wife is a wonderful lady! As I said in a previous post, I've retired to Blacksburg now so it’s been a while. He’s grown up a lot but his dad was a big UNC fan. We teased each other a lot! I always wondered if those kids would go there.

That side of the family got all the size and talent. My side sucked hind
Teat. As a Qb on Freshman team I was 98 pounds, 118 as a Sophomore for Fries, 238 as Jr. Beefed up to 165 and broke my leg first of season senior year. Their side were that big as Sophomores. Some good baseball players also.

Taught
at the middle school there before retiring to Blacksburg. Their softball coach was my teaching partner for a few years. She works hard at it and has a lot of community support. She and her husband are big time Hokies! Another teaching partner's daughter (who is a Hokie) is playing Western Carolina this year. She was the winning pitcher in the state championship for them this past year and is now playing at Middle Tn State. Her dad is a Hokie as well. I taught her and they would have loved for her to have come here. The third pitcher from there signed with Radford in November and was the National Little League Home Run Derby Champ in 2021. Unless it's changed, she doesn't play for the high school. She plays with a travel team. I taught her mother. Would have loved to have had all 3. Great young ladies from wonderful families!

A senior this year has signed with UNC-Greensboro.
The coach and her husband are known to me. She and I taught together for a few years. The players are known to me also from umpiring their games.

Between those 2, Lemley from Jefferson
Forest, and the Rustburg girl at UVA , central Va. has produced some really good pitchers. Also the girl from Liberty who pitched at Clemson.

I have a good friend whose daughter played for Brookville..
Her name was Jordan Dail. You may remember her She signed with VT. She was tight with Andrea Tincher. But when coach Pete decided not to retain Tincher, Jordan transferred to Oregon where she was Pac 12 player of the week several times. Went on to coach at UNC and then Pitt

Often wondered why she left us.

Its called being #2 (or #3) - Eberle was a So and Rochard a Fr too - she
was in steep competition and those two were great, Dail was a bit wild if you recall. End up doing great at Oregon. I also heard she "needed" a change of scenery but I dont know why... Had we been able to keep Eberle with Rochard - we are IN the CWS IMHO. Eberle went to OkSU and did great.
SarahVTHokie24 SarahVTHokie24

She was only a freshman at the time...
Most freshmen arent #1 or #2 right out of high school. Obviously she was able to get the "wildness" under control ** Edited by SarahVTHokie24 at 2/24/2026, 1:46:14 PM

Correct - she went to Oregon and became a #1 as only scholly P in 2019 and
pitched ~250 innings. The question above was "Why did she leave VT?" - It was because she was going to be #2 or #3. At Oregon she became the #1, but relinquished that by 2020 and rest of career...so VT picked the right girls to keep - Eberle and Rochard....

I followed Dial at Oregon and yes, she threw 250 innings and allowed 402
Baserunners, incredible.... as Casey Stengle said "You can look it up"

Right - but it just did not last and Eberle and Rochard did great 4 us.

As I said in my original post...
She left because she was tight with Tincher. She was upset that coach let Tincher go. Nothing to do with being 1 or 2. Her dad told me the whole story, but that's all you need to know

Angela Tincher btw. So we go all the way to Oregon b/c a coach was let go?
And stories from Dad are always slanted towards family "shine". Gillis was Petes Assistant at KSU and they hired Kumar. Im still certain VT kept the best pitchers - though Gillis has some "splaining" to do as later years abrupt exit under shady circumstances presents...
