I really enjoy having Notre Dame on the football schedule
every now and then. It's a nice change of pace and allows Tech to have visibility on a different network (NBC when we're the visiting team). I think it behooves both the ACC and ND to have a chat, air their grievances and come up with a resolution. To me, it seems silly to blow up the relationship. Let's think practically and leave emotions at the door.
If they can't resolve it, then oh well. The way things are going, college football as we know it will look drastically different in another decade anyway, so this kerfuffle would be nothing in comparison.
I don't think the ACC was wrong for advocating for its full member in Miami. I can recall how conspicuously quiet Jim Phillips was when undefeated FSU was left out in favor of Alabama (again), so I guess this was his chance to make up for that?
However, I don't think their argument was the proper one. The ACC should have been pushing that Alabama did not belong in the playoff:
1. they lost to a garbage FSU team whereas Miami and ND's losses were much less egregious and
2. this avoids the Notre Dame/Miami dichotomy.
I think this gives the ACC and Notre Dame the perfect chance to put everything out on the table and discuss it all. With every relationship, there are points of contention and the longer they fester the bigger the potential infection. For example, I was not at all a fan of the 12-year home-and-home football series ND and Clemson scheduled outside of the ACC/ND football agreement. Sure, if that contract had no impact on the larger ACC/ND scheduling partnership, then no worries. However, my understanding is that this contract will result in other ACC schools having fewer matchups with the Irish. That should be revisited if true.
I really hope they end up working through these bumps so that both parties benefit as a result.

The decision between ND and Mia was that simple.
The committee played ND (intentionally or unintentionally) with earlier rankings and they can't stand it - have to blame someone other than themselves for losing...

The relationship is severed. A lot of stuff went on behind the scenes that is not in the public domain.

... and go away. And I'd would let you do it free of charge.
IMO, ACC was stupid to make the deal with ND in the first place.

...breach of contract? How so? You aren't an ACC member (when it comes to football) and that's 100% your choice, so don't whine that the ACC fought to get Miami into the playoff.

You make cryptic references to other circumstances having rendered the relationship untenable. Despite all of that, I say, again, that a practical resolution could be had as long as both parties check their emotions and egos at the door to focus on a pragmatic result for everyone. It seems that not everyone is willing to do that, and it coincides quite conveniently with the new agreement where ND gets into the playoff as long as they are in the top 12 of the committee rankings.
Since the ACC now has unequal revenue allocations, Virginia Tech has the chance to earn a bigger piece of the pie based on performance on the field and in the TV ratings. Given our new coaching staff, budget commitments and overall excitement surrounding the program, I'm very excited for the Hokies to EARN this additional attention and revenue. If dealing with more Notre Dame drama queen behavior is an unintended result of the ACC/ND agreement, then I'm fine with them no longer being on the football schedule or with us competing against them in the non-revs. I wish Notre Dame luck in negotiating a more advantageous agreement with another conference.

ND AD: We are counting on that $20M CFP payout to be able to clear coat the gold helmets next year, so we need for you guys to step aside and not push for a conference member. Please don't bring up that loss to Miami early in the year.
ACC commish: The ACC is barely hanging on by a string. We need that berth to give an appearance of relevance. We cannot with good conscience ignore the head to head win by the Hurricanes.
ND AD: That is unacceptable! We give the ACC the privilege of playing below touchdown Jesus 3-4 times a season. We demand respect! If we do not get that respect, we will go elsewhere.
ACC: Sorry you feel that way. By the way, Rudy was offsides.
ACC talking amongst themselves: How many times have these a-holes cut off their noses to spite their faces through the years?

ND is the ACC's side chick - she doesn't get wife privileges....

I mean you have did everyone else bad. The ACC has kissed your ugly ways for year. And we supposed to feel sorry. Maybe finally ACC is trying to divorce. They have nothing to lose IMO.

What kind of power does anyone think the ACC possesses to make any of this happen? Laughable.

...is that we're supposed to accept the premise that the ACC is capable of some massively influential lobbying campaign (via their twitter account?) lolol.
The actual truth is that ND has wanted out for a while now and is just using this to rationalize and justify speeding up the timeline of their departure (which, ironically, makes them perfect partners for the Clemsons and Florida States of the world).

one rich dude at Texas Tech or Michigan State (and whoever is next) can in one stroked check erase and probably exceed whatever brand advantage that ND still has?
The power balance for several reasons in shifting not towards ND but away from it. Im not suggesting ND has to join a conference just that it will only become harder and harder to sustain any advantage they may have enjoyed in the past.
So if their plan is to ask for admittance to the B1G or SEC soon, maybe going after the ACC can feel good and be somewhat strategic. Otherwise none of this emotional tantrum makes any sense to me.
