I give it 5 more years before the entire thing collapses. Of course, that could be accelerated by outside factors that we cannot discuss here.

I think that the B1G's total TV deal was around 7 billion dollars over 7 years. A few missteps and complaints about a deal of this size involving this amount of money with this many parties should be expected. Can you image how ecstatic the PAC-12 would be to have these problems instead of the contract problems that they are dealing with right now.

that the relationships between these conferences and the networks is likely to be highly adversarial because a) the networks likely overpaid significantly and will be under tremendous pressure to find ways to mitigate losses and b) the contracts are so complex and gray, that the lawyers are going to continued to make a sh*t ton of money working out the fine details for a long while.

Besides, they don't truly have to pay that $40M back. Fox just won't be paying them that money for the championship game in 2026.

wait and see when the dust settles. Probably the only thing certain right now is the adjustment will be NO LESS than $40 million. The next shoe will be when more crawls out from the Big Ten and after that when the Big 12's PR House of Cards starts to crumble.

It's on the level of the PAC12 overcharging Comcast.
The November night game issue can be worked out now that they have 2 Los Angeles members and Maryland. NBC will need to work with them on that. Perhaps break their tradition of never playing out of conference past September and allow the ND at USC game every other year be on one of those November prime time games every other year.

Apparently the Big Ten doesn't own it's television rights. The BTN owns the rights, and Fox owns half of the BTN.
Here is the pertinent part of the ESPN article.
In 2016, when the Big Ten announced its long-term television deal with Fox and ESPN, the announcement didn't include all the details. One of the things that didn't get disclosed at the time, nor as the new deal was being discussed in recent months, was that the Big Ten Network had acquired all of the league's programming rights back in 2016 through an undisclosed date. The length of that deal with the Big with the Big Ten Network from 2016 is carried at least through the current deal, which has been announced through the 2029-30 season.
This means that it wasn't just Swofford who signed a long term deal in 2016. Delany did too. It's complicating this new Kevin Warren Deal.

I don't know the order of selection for that game (i.e. if it comes first or after Fox has their pick). They would have to have a selection order. If not they screwed that up big.
The issue with the Championship game is that it was already sold to FOX. And then it was sold again to NBC. It can't be played on both networks, so to play on NBC Fox has to be paid for it. NBC isn't going to pay Fox. NBC is paying the B1G. The B1G will have to pay Fox to not show it. The reporter is estimating $40 million. That has to be now negotiated with Fox.

These BIG schools are spoiled. For the amount of money they are getting, they should play when and where the networks want. They sold their souls for a boat lid of cash and now want to complain about historical tolerances.
This all gets more comical as details emerge. The BIG is the softest bunch of creampuff, bowtie wearing, brie cheese eating, ascot wearing wussies I've ever seen in my life. There is not a softer bunch of cookie doe eating weinees than the Big Ten football programs. (Credit to Colin Cowherd)

Then schedule the 4th one at Rutgers. NBC may balk at that wanting them at the contenders. But with USC and UCLA in there they have more warmer weather options.

Apparently, the total per team under the new deal is closer to $65 million than the $75 million previously announced by the Big Ten.
They owe Fox something like $40 million. The Big Ten doesn't own its TV rights, the BTN does and Fox owns the majority of the BTN.
They sold some rights that they do not own.
Other than the above, all is well.

is not necessarily gold and in this day and age there is tremendous pressure for the final contracts to match the early spin. We saw it with the train wreck in the PAC 12 with Larry Scott. We are now seeing it with Kevin Warren and the B1G. The media trial balloons were all touting that magical billion dollar contract before the ink hit the paper. I have been saying all along that something similar is brewing with the Big 12 deal. We will see, IF and WHEN, Yormark and named FOX and/or ESPN officials ever go on record regarding specifics. I think the current B1G issues provide a glimpse as to what might be going on there. Yormark does have one advantage over Warren, there are no Ohio States, Michigan's, Penn States, etc. left in the Big 12 to complain and they are desperate for any contract that puts them in a stronger position than the PAC 12 as they both scramble to attract and/or retain conference members.

I have to give it to you. So many things get close to happening, but without something signed, can fall apart quickly.
We seem to be in an age where people announce things before they happen, hoping the announcement momentum will carry the deal. However, the pendulum swings back and forth on most things, if some of these fall apart after being announced, I could easily see the pendulum swinging back.

I think it is important to focus on what is actually said by who AND, sometimes just as important, what is not said. I will continue to read Big 12 info and challenge as necessary and I will have no problem admitting if I am wrong in the future. I formerly challenged @chuckd4vt on Scott and the PAC 12 as well as the B1G details and, at least so far, it looks like I was more accurate than off the mark. Finally, we all want more info from the ACC on media but, one thing for sure, if you never say much it is difficult to be called out later. ;-)
