Entire Marshall team is entering th Portal w/ Coach Huff, most love coach!
I know we need some checks and balances on the Portal like the Founders of the country did, but the fact that his players want to play for him that much is impressive!!

will Marshall have any players for the bowl????
however, big statement about the Marshall athletic dept leadership. Why would the DC at NC State, who is extremely stable in Raleigh, take that insanity

Why in the world would he leave Marshall for Southern Miss?
That's a lateral move, at best, and looks more like an "I anticipate I am going to be fired" move to me; I saw that he is the first sitting FBS head coach to leave his current gig for Southern Miss. But, that doesn't make any sense either, because he just won the SBC with Marshall - there's no way his seat was hot. Southern Miss must have really delivered the bag, or Huff must really not have gotten along with the Marshall administration.

My understanding is that he knew his contract wouldn't be renewed.

That would be wild if accurate.
Not sure what more Marshall could want.

I have a buddy that follows Marshall like I do Tech. Huff blew a lot of
goodwill with the fanbase and, apparently, the admin by complaining about what Marshall didn't have, resource wise. Apparently his wife hated it there, too. Who knows how true any of this is, but that was the rumor anyway.

That would definitely make a lot of sense.

Even if So. Miss doesn't have that much deeper pockets, it is physically
located in the most fertile recruiting grounds for football (aka the Gulf Coast Region) so it should have an easier time to recruit players. Particularly if the Sun Belt schools don't have a large recruiting budget and coaches rely more on signing recruits within a smaller radius.

USM has deeper pockets I imagine.
Not sure how, but they do.

They also have one of the smallest athletic budgets in all of FBS. Maybe
they have decided to step it up, and wont to be relevant again, but man, they better have some doner deep pockets, or they are spinning their wheels.

No they're broke.
Huff got out of a situation where neither side was happy and he could reset his coaching clock.

Institutional support (money) is certainly at play here. We don't know
the contract figures of his move, but it is my guess that So. Miss has made an unprecedented investment, not only in the head coach, but it is my guess that the assistants will be making a lot more money as well. It could be that a once proud G5 success story is looking around at the landscape, and realizes that they are being left behind. So. miss has a pretty strong NIL program (for their conference), so that kind of support should help in recruiting. Could So. Miss be making the types of investments that will get the attention of the AAC pr PAC? probably not, but at one point, they were one the premier G5 schools back in the day in regards to football success. The Marshall administration is showing that they may want to go back to the days of winning FCS national championships. They did not up their game in the contract negotiations, and seem to be content not making the investments it will take in FBS moving forward. Kinda bewildering to me, but not all presidents and administrations put a premium on the value of a strong athletic program - especially in the climate we are in currently.

I've said it before, but this would have been
awesome and benefited a lot of programs that have gotten caught in the realignment riptides.

That certainly would be a great conference
I'm not sure we would have achived the heights that we did if not for the path that we took, though. The Big East, whether we like the conference or not, was very good for Hokie football. The ACC has been good for all Hokies. Would the all-sport Metro have been good for us? We'll never know.

He just won the Conference Championship, he wasn’t going to be fired. 💵
and better football recruits in the Deep South is my guess why he left. ** Edited by Stech at 12/11/2024, 2:45:40 PM

Not in my book
I was on the Huff train too.

The flip side of this is Marshall is now an attractive option for players
in the portal wanting playing time. Those players will be eager to prove their mettle. Marshall will probably take a step back, but they might find some gems.
S
Stech OP
Yep, he took about 16, he’s taking the whole team, that’s amazing!

Is Huff going to tell everyone at his new school, "you're fired?"

"We comin'!"

Maybe not everyone with the new scholarship limit, certainly many of them.

Its 105 now
S
Stech OP
Yep, so he can hold on to some SM players too. Also, some end up staying.

What does UL have to do with Huff? Am I missing something?
He’s moving to Southern Miss.
S
Stech OP
They just hired him and the entire Marshal team hit the portal.
R

Huff was hired at the University of Southern Mississippi not UL
S
Stech OP
Haha you are right, not sure why I put UL in there, I need to slow down but
I will edit the post. Thanks for letting me know.
