Why should ACC "move on" from ND?
I see many posts on here suggesting that the ACC should end it's relationship with ND? I don't see how that benefits the ACC at all. Yes, ND has made it VERY CLEAR that they will NEVER join the ACC in football. It also seems very clear that at some point ND will join a another conference for the B1G Bucks! So... what does the ACC gain by accelerating that process?
GOR may last thru 2036, but Bowl Alliances and TV Coverage depend on eyeballs every year.
* ACC gets better bowl alliances with ND in the package.
* ACC teams host 2-3 games annually with ND - always good ratings
* ACC teams play 2-3 games at ND (on NBC) annually - always good exposure
ND seems to be content staying independent for the next few years and honoring the ACC scheduling deal.
IMHO, the best thing the ACC can do in the next few years is for their power programs to return to glory (Clemson, Miami, FSU, VT) and have a few more programs really step up the competition (NCSU, Pitt, Louisville, GT). For this to happen, ACC teams need to start winning high profile OOC games. ND provides that opportunity. ACC needs to stop going 0-5 against ND every year - especially when ND is a top 25 team.

The ACC needs to go on the offensive. Notre Dame is never joining the ACC. If they join a conference it will the B10. The problem with the ACC, is they are always reactive and 5 years too late. The big 10 and SEC have shown the way for the future.
The goal of the ACC should be to be the 3rd best conference right now. To do that, invite WVU and another school from big 12. This would weaken the Big 12. Anything the Big12 and Pac put together will not match the new ACC.

I agree, that does not mean we should push them out. Your assessment is right I think, the arrangement is mutually beneficial. We should keep that going.
Another benefit is that our ND association might help lure other programs in. If it comes to us bringing in 4-5 west coast teams, the ND association will help sell that, for example.

It really is that simple. Long term plans should not include ND, so plan accordingly.

but make plans as if ND won't be there. If they need to be aggressive and expand, then do so. But no decisions for the ACC should be made thinking ND will be in the picture, and they shouldn't be involved in the discussions.

waiting for Notre Dame, before you expand. Get 2-4 schools that will add eyeballs. I currently like WVU and Cincinnati, but anywhere that will give us more playoff candidates and more basketball tournament teams.

I would want them to commit to an average of 6 ACC games per year, and have the ACC move to a 9 game schedule, 3-6-6 model. That, coupled with WVU +1, should increase the $M payout.

And ND didn't play at Miami for a long time, but they went back after the ACC deal.

ND is not going to budge one inch from its current ACC contractual obligations.
I do think it wise for the ACC to expand with other schools, though.
Why hasn't it?

Would adding WVU cause the self destruct number to go to nine? I could see the safe schools (Clemson, UNC, UVa and FSU, I guess) objecting to that, if they have an eye to the SEC or B10 right now.
Certainly adding WVU and Cincinnati would push it to nine.

holding off expansion for them is a liability. The ACC cannot afford to stay the same, and expect a different result, but so much of this relies on ESPN and what they will pay.

The ACC is doing that on its own.
What has stopped it from expanding?

I really believe they would almost let VT leave without much penalty. The ACC desires to be OTHER sports great. VT, FSU, Clemson and maybe Pitt desire football. Lifeline for all. Interesting times for VT. With FSU president clamoring. I am wondering what is really up. Now that ND is only another team in the other sports part of ACC. Indeed the ACC needs to step up . I am now thinking 20.
WVU
Cincy,
Houston
TCU or Smu

ND is not at all a factor in what the ACC is planning. Unless the ACC are total idiots and ignoring all the obvious information out there. But let’s assume the new ACC leaders are not totally stupid.
As for why no expansion yet, I think the dominos needed to fall in a certain order. First was BIG media deal. Next is ND media deal. Once those pieces are set the ACC can use them as a baseline to discuss expansion scenarios with ESPN.
The good news is that the ACC has an existing deal and a dedicated network. So now it becomes a discussion for how to improve things in order to make it more valuable. I could see the ACC expanding any time between now and next summer. But I do think they will act within the next year to go to 16. My money is on WVU and Cincinnati to stay close to current footprint but also get new states.

That would really shake things up if we took 6 teams from the B12 and got the ACC to 20. I would really enjoy the reactions to that in the media.

with the status quo, it may still lose some bowl bids for the next contract because of the moves the Big Ten and SEC have recently made. At the same time, the ACC could always pick up new bowl bids against G5 opponents to replace the bids lost.

Having ND on the schedule helps ACC teams. And the ACC helps ND by guaranteed scheduling each year for 4-6 games. That is important for an independent. There really is no downside to having ND with the hybrid ACC relationship.
The ACC needs two things. To win games, and to have 2-3 top teams emerge consistently with winning games. Everything else flows from that.

Agree 100% but it is an emotional issue for some, not rational. On the
other hand, I think some wishing ND was forced out now, want to also quickly add schools like WVU, Cincinnati and maybe a couple Texas schools. In that case we’d need to play 9 or 10 conference games a year eliminating room for ND on schedules.

Football was understood by both sides to not be included in the deal.
Nothing has changed since 2012 on that score.

go to. ND will have a place, but 6 more would be looking or try to expand the ACC again. It will be very tough sledding!!
