When it was introduced, NIL was supposed to be an avenue where players could be compensated for their name and likeness. What happened is all of the ugly under the table money was brought to the surface, and players are being paid far more than the signers expected. But if you redefine NIL, those under the table payouts will go back under the table, so there's no clear answer.
