I never understood how they thought Syracuse...

...added the NYC market. A mediocre college team on the opposite side of the state from a pro market couldn't possibly move the needle that much.

Would Maryland and Rutgers get B10 invites today?
LonghornHokie 09/15/23 07:23 PM ET
My immediate reaction was “No”, however, “Maybe.”
BeachGobbler 09/19/23 01:30 PM ET
You mean the two "trash programs"
Vippie1 09/17/23 05:35 PM ET
Hey just because we're terrrible
mancunian 09/18/23 08:52 AM ET
The SEC goes for rivalries not markets, the B1G goes for markets 2 models,
Stech 09/16/23 10:55 PM ET
Possibly because the B1G/Fox were adding NYC and Wash/Baltimore
HOO86 09/16/23 07:49 AM ET
But the B1X added the NJ market. Cuse added the NYC market to the ACC
EDGEMAN 09/17/23 07:30 AM ET
Being in the Metro Area gets them I believe.

I never understood how they thought Syracuse...
Culpeper Hokie 09/17/23 09:42 AM ET
It's called having a school in the state.
EDGEMAN 09/17/23 10:27 AM ET
Same reason the ACC added BC (Boston) and Cuse (NY)**
Hardcore_Hokie 09/16/23 07:57 AM ET
The ACC has wanted Cuse since the 80s.
HOO86 09/16/23 08:08 AM ET
Then Miami president Donna Shalala pushed hard for BC
Millpoint 09/16/23 02:14 PM ET
WVU, Pitt, & VT would have been much better choices.**
EDGEMAN 09/17/23 07:47 AM ET
Conferences don’t “want” schools. Networks want big media markets.
Hardcore_Hokie 09/16/23 08:25 AM ET
It was different in the late 80s
HOO86 09/16/23 08:55 AM ET
The ACC should've gone after Penn State in the 1980's...
Old Line Hokie 09/16/23 10:56 AM ET
ACC didn’t even think to ask PSU. The folks in charge were blindsided
reestuart 09/17/23 04:21 PM ET
Joe ws screaming from a rooftop that a conference needed to be formed. Look
Big12 guy 09/16/23 11:35 AM ET
VT would have been excluded from JoePa's football conference
EDGEMAN 09/17/23 07:33 AM ET
It would have been nice to have them in the Big East. If that had happened
IB4TECH 09/16/23 07:57 PM ET
No, the Big East with the Basketball schools was doomed from the start. **
Big12 guy 09/16/23 11:23 PM ET
I think he may have.....
2hhoop3 09/16/23 12:05 PM ET
FSU and even adding Miami may have changed Paterno's mind.
Old Line Hokie 09/16/23 02:08 PM ET
Not if there was a Northeast football conference (before the Big East). The
Big12 guy 09/16/23 06:14 PM ET
Paterno would have formed it in the Big East
HOO86 09/16/23 07:42 PM ET
Basketball was the death nail. The future (as we know now) was
Big12 guy 09/16/23 11:28 PM ET
Did you actually mean “death nail?” Or death knell?
WestyHokie 09/19/23 07:17 PM ET
A play on words. **
Big12 guy 09/21/23 09:26 AM ET
Based on how things evolved? Very likely with the regional football schools
Big12 guy 09/16/23 12:08 PM ET
The BE and the ACC......
2hhoop3 09/16/23 12:18 PM ET
The power in the BE was in basketball...
gman86 09/20/23 09:50 AM ET
I understand all of that......
2hhoop3 09/20/23 10:17 AM ET
Tranghese told Dave Gavitt
mancunian 09/18/23 01:00 PM ET
I see Tranghese a little differently (and I am not a fan of his)
corvt2000 09/16/23 03:59 PM ET
If UNC and Dook had locked out VT, would the SEC have come calling?
EDGEMAN 09/17/23 07:39 AM ET
I think if you look a little deeper......
2hhoop3 09/16/23 04:28 PM ET
Agree, Tranghese waited until 1999 when Tech was one of...
Old Line Hokie 09/16/23 02:21 PM ET
They didn't want VT to be on an equal BB footing with the BE BB schools
EDGEMAN 09/17/23 07:42 AM ET
I believe the only reason the Big East offered full membership to VT when
VTHokie2000 09/16/23 03:09 PM ET
I think Gene Corrigan regretted not doing that
HOO86 09/16/23 11:08 AM ET
ACC's lack of bowl tie in hurt them
mrcaniac 09/17/23 05:51 PM ET
Donna Shelela would have still preferred Cuse and BC over PSU
EDGEMAN 09/17/23 07:45 AM ET
maybe still. with Big 10 grabbing USC and UCLA
Mercury 09/16/23 09:28 AM ET
Yes, and that one was specifically directed by Fox**
HOO86 09/16/23 09:42 AM ET
Fox was directing the B12 to seriously consider Gonzaga and UConn
Big12 guy 09/16/23 10:52 AM ET
Was that Fox or Yormack?
HOO86 09/16/23 07:46 PM ET
Ummm, do you think that any conference today makes a move without a network
Big12 guy 09/16/23 11:30 PM ET
Absolutely not. It was a very different time when they were added.**
