when it was allowed. No longer the case now. Actually supposed to be torn down but no money for it. Personnel actually went up in it for their re- enlistment ceremony.

Both were converted from side-wheel paddle steamers designed for luxury cruises.

It was widely shall we say 'distributed' around campus when the Engineering Freshman class who started in 1984 all had to have a PC.
Very challenging game to win, even when you figured out a good strategy.

The Japanese were short 2 carriers, the Shokaku and Zuikaku. The Shokaku was heavily damaged at Coral Sea, and the Zuikaku lost most of her air crew so she missed Midway.

If Enterprise and Hornet hadn't been sent off on the Doolittle Raid, the US would have had a big advantage at Coral Sea and could have potentially done a lot more damage to the Japanese fleet. It would have been a 4-to-2 advantage in fleet carriers. The what-ifs go both ways.
My belief is that the Japanese tried to do too much. They tried to do Coral Sea and Midway too close together (along with a minor operation in the Indian Ocean as well, I think) rather than massing their forces in one operation in an attempt to get the entire US carrier force into a decisive battle.

Would we have come out and played? We would still have had Enterprise and Hornet out on the Doolittle Raid, so we wouldn't have been able to match their fleet. Even for a target as important as Midway, would the US Navy have sallied forth to meet an obviously superior force? That doesn't seem like a recipe for success, and I wonder if Nimitz would've made that call.

Assuming in your scenario that we still had Lexington since Coral Sea didn't happen. That would have helped.
