Cooper Hawk in the last two days visiting our feeders (Midlothian-VA)
He is a big guy.
Surprised, he is this close to living room window/back of the house. Wasn't really worried about us moving inside the home.
Other birds (etc) have come to almost ignore us inside. Except when the squirrels try to get into the feeders and we chase them down.

Forest, VA not terribly close to water. The crows were not happy.

Was right outside my window.
Where I lived was the furthered point north that the Mississippi didn't stay frozen all winter, thus bald eagles congregated there in the winter....trees along the river and in small bays were full of them.

something out of my car. Suddenly I hear this loud "thud" sound. A good size Hawk had fallen off the roof and landed
on top of my large plastic (roll out to the street type) trashcan. The Hawk was completely motionless. Not knowing if it was
just momentarily stunned I did not want to get too close and get a handful of talons. I grabbed a shovel and lifted it
off the trash can and put in the bushes at the back of the yard. I thought about calling animal control...but when I went back to the bushes about 10 minutes later it was gone.

Or it was like the Monty Python parrot. Simply "Stunned".

Size is all I could go by to distinguish. It was much more Blue Jay size vs. crow size. That's how one reference suggested IDing them.
Also have regular Barred Owl visits. Not sure if it's the same one, but let's me get pretty close before silently taking flight heading right through the middle of the woods/trees.
Prefer these birds to the dang deer that eat everything.

you're not going to see them close up so learn how to distinguish them at a distance from the similarly looking but smaller sharp-shinned hawk, so that's a a pretty nice get to see 'em close up like that.

the sharp-shinned head is more even with its wings when flying, not that I've ever ID'd one that way.

Both of them are also Accipiters, so they don't soar burning circles in the sky. They are more of a "point and shoot" kind of hawk.
