I can't remember which book it was (I think something about real stories from Europe), but believe it or not the US got extremely lucky at the time of D-Day. The Germans believed the invasion was still about a month off and actually recalled most of the command structure and Luftwaffe to Germany for invasion discussions and exercises a day or two before D-Day. Whether or not the US was aware of that is debatable, but the moon, tide, and weather determined D-Day timing more so than intelligence on German activities. Basically we were facing mostly unorganized troops without their leaders. We expected much more resistance especially from the air. Bombing heavily the night before would have clued the Germans into the invasion and they likely would have returned the command structure to the front line, reinforced the Atlantic wall with aircraft, and realized the true location of the invasion. From everything I've read we did about the best we could with what we had. What we really should have done is abandoned the amphibious tanks as the number of troops that drowned in the chop after being released too far off shore in rough seas was insane.

If on, rope drop Rise of the Resistance. By that I mean get to HS well before official rope drop time. They'll actually let you in early all the way into the line of Rise of the Resistance. They don't start running it until rope drop, but we were all the way to the hologram room when the ride started moving. Same thing for magic kingdom. Rope drop is the name of the game. At MK we did Peter Pan, Little Mermaid, Barnstormer, Pooh, and Dumbo before the park opened. LL has changed since we went in '23 so I can't give you all the ins and outs. " 1. flood of biblical proportions OR 2. Something broke." The ground in Centra VA has been historically saturated this winter. I looked at USGS water gauges last night and they were higher than they've been in at least 4 years. "No visible signs of sump/pump and no connected breaker - likely a previous system that was replaced." It's weird though. I have a trench but no pit. Previous owner put down an epoxy garage floor coating. Maybe he leveled the garage and coated over the pit? "Basement garage implies walk out basement - and therefore basement slab ~ grade level on at least one end of house." The entirety of the the front is underground and then there's a back retaining wall under the deck. That drops off about 3 feet (with SOME drainage) to the driveway / basement door and garage. "Any chance, based on grades, a new gravity perimeter drainage system was installed? Any place there could be an outfall to storm drain or even to grade/daylight where you could get access? Before I spent tons, I'd carefully cut a test pit thru the floor at the perimeter drainage/sump system. See if there is a drainage pipe or just gravel. If pipe, try a long drainage snake to see if it is blocked. Any nearby recent grading/construction?" Nothing new installed lately. "Where do buried downspouts empty? Could one of these be blocked allowing excess water against the foundation? Could water test each one with a hose to see if any backup - starting near where interior damage is the worst." This is my fear. I've killed probably 200+ chipmunks since I've been in this house. Their burrows have killed trees / caused significant erosion in areas. They love to run up the downspout outflows. That said, two of the downspouts are riveted to the gutter and run under the driveway. Was thinking about calling someone to snake them as I down want to damage corrugated black line. "Again, if the results you said are literal - something broke (or experienced extreme flood) - not just incremental wear and tear." At 5PM I went into my garage to get something out of my fridge. It had been raining cats and dogs all day. The garage was dry. At 6:30 PM I went back in and the water was almost to my ankles. I dumped a 16 gallon wet dry vac about 15-20 times and the other 3 people with me dumped theirs 3-5 times. There was never standing water on top of my laminate, but it had gotten on top of the vapor barrier and come up through the laminate seams in places. Only a small seciton of drywall that had been cut and reinstalled around the base of my walls was damp. The water never got on top of the seal plate in the walls. It wasn't worse b/c we caught it. I know it seems like I'm cheaping out, but I had a plumbing incident in the fall and we had to spend major $$$ fixing the house that insurance didn't fully cover. In fact, matters are worse b/c we had just had the hardwoods refinished and most of our stuff was in the basement and garage... all of it got wet. I'm thinking about putting down a raised underlayment with LVP on top. Nothing susceptible to water. In a pinch, I can pull up sections and dry things out. Was thinking about getting water sensors (with my security system) and just a 120V submersible pump that I set on the low spot in the garage. I don't plan to move out any time soon so I'm not worried about resale in the short term. We've evidently got a big storm coming tomorrow. I may just keep my eyes open to see if there's water intrusion while everything is torn apart. Just don't feel like taking out a HELOC when I just drained the emergency fund.

Remediation guy said the water table was at an all-time high. I can't find a direct source of the leak but water was pushing up through the cracks in the cement slab in places. Nothing changed otherwise. There's been one other time where I walked in to a 2' puddle of water in my garage but that was it. We've had abnormal amounts of moisture this spring but who knows? Lots of crazy weather going on these days what with all the cloud seeding a chem trails... I keed....

TLDR: My basement flooded in the last rainstorm for the 1st real time in 12 years. Should I drop $20k for a sump install? Longer: Bought my house in 2012 and the garage had some signs of water intrusion and the laminate flooring had some rolled up edges but we (and the home inspector) chalked it up to the golden retriever that ran roughshod all over the house. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago and I tool several hundred gallons out of my garage and had water seeping up through the joints in my laminate in the finished part of my basement (I have a basement garage). I ripped up the laminate and clearly the this had happened before as there was a 2-3" strip of drywall all around the basement and what looks like a sump drainage system installed around the walls. Only trouble is... there is no sign of a sump or sump pump anywhere. There is a piece of masking tape on the breaker box that says "move the sump from breaker x to breaker y", but that's it. Now I'm at a crossroads. Do I close my eye, plug my ears, and blurt "lalalala" and put down LVP hoping to go another 12 years without flooding issues or do I drop $20k to install a sump and then another $10+k to rebuild the basement that foundation guys will tear up? No mold on the walls. No noxious smell. I do have buried downspouts and 50,000 chipmunks that like to run up my drains... Thoughts? ** Edited by hokiehunter07 at 3/4/2025, 9:23:10 AM

I'm a Dewalt guy. Not necessarily b/c of loyalty, I just got a great deal on a set years ago and have about 12 batteries and a whole kit of 20V / Flexvolt power tools. I was working as a tooling engineer and my manager at the time told me to run to Home Depot and get a Milwaukee drill / impact set. It was the Saturday before father's day (loved the OT at the time) and they had a tool special like in your OP. Well, the only thing they had left was a hedge trimmer so I took it. Now I'm a Dewalt guy with piles of batteries and my boss said the trimmer was my mileage reimbursement. good guy. Problem is I didn't want to go spend $200 on a battery and charger. I was also a broke "A" new father at the time. Fast forward a couple years and I bought a charger and 2 batteries for $150 and got a cordless impact or hammer drill free. Well full drills are about useless compared to an impact these days. Now I have a Red tool and a Yellow tool and I love them both. I have 8 and 10 YO boys that help me build around the house and each can have their own impact. No fighting.

Who do I talk to about unacceptable facilities? I went to Boonsboro Elementary this afternoon and the ceiling near the cafeteria is basically a glass atrium. There's water freely rushing in through the glass seams, down onto the fluorescent lighting, and into sand toy buckets on the floor. IF the school can't get the county / state to get up there with some sealant what kind of He11 do I need to raise and where?

We're too risk averse in many areas. I'd say the safety of people facing a winter in the mountains cut off from the rest of the world is worse than a possible once in 10,000 year storm popping up during construction.

Is governed by standards. Build by the commonly known and expected standards and everything will be fine. Get the guys that know what they're doing to move the earth rather than waiting for one pencil pusher to get in line. It's not like they're designing and implementing a major interstate.

Glad I got most of my liberal arts crap done in high school so I could focus on useful classes at VT. I'm didn't go to higher education to be more rounded.
