There’s been a shooting incident at the Huguenot High
graduation being held at the Altria Theatre adjacent to the VCU campus in Richmond. At least 4 were shot - no details as to the conditions of the people shot.

Just saw on the news the perp was arrested and charged with 2 counts of...
...2nd degree murder. He brought a firearm to shoot up a graduation, so why wasn't he charged with two counts of first degree murder? Doesn't his actions fulfill the requirements for that charge? IMHO, charging him with second degree murder is an insult to the victims.

Always start with the charges you know you can get. You can upgrade as you
Find out more info/evidence.

Crazy, was at my nephews graduation yesterday at the Seigel Center down the
street. Drove past the Altria at at 4:45 yesterday, probably about 30 minutes prior to the shootings.

My fear since I heard the news is that this is somehow retaliation for...
...a shooting that happened earlier this year outside of George Wythe High School, another local school. That's speculation, but this definitely seems like a targeted attack.

It sure appears so.
I guess we will know more tomorrow or later this week. ** Edited by RJHokie at 6/6/2023, 9:40:16 PM

Heartbreaking. I just got the notification about that from...
...Richmond public schools a little while ago. I just attended my daughter's fifth grade graduation ceremony at Southampton elementary this morning, a feeder school for Huguenot High School. Our daughter won't be staying in the RPS system beyond this year for reasons such as this, but my heart is broken for the families affected by this. We were at a school-system-wide awards ceremony a few weeks ago, and there were several students from Huguenot recognized there, and I drive by that school almost daily. I realize the shooting didn't happen AT the school, but the people affected by this are in my community, so this hits really close to home for me. I have to admit that I left my daughter's school this morning with a feeling of relief that we had made it safely through another school year, but now this news just crushes my spirit. I'm sure there are a wide range of opinions about the causes and solutions to this problem and we can't really discuss those here. I just pray for everyone affected and that our country can have some hard internal conversations about the lack of value we seem to place on human life.

Ugh. Just listened to an interview that my friend and school board rep...
...gave to the WRIC news crew earlier this evening. He was just inside the theater greeting people as they left the ceremony following the graduation and heard/witnessed it all. He was also present at my daughter's elementary school graduation ceremony this morning and I shook his hand and spoke with him there. What a range of emotions he and his colleagues have experienced today. It just absolutely sucks.

Yeah….crazy stuff.
That section of Richmond isn’t exactly a really safe area though.

The incident happened at the Altria, which is not a dangerous area.

Agreed. Monroe Park totally cleaned up and homeless moved out.
Lots of VCU students hangout there when school in session plus community events like festivals. Unfortunate events can happen anywhere.

I'd say it was dangerous in the 80s and 90s. It has been safer since...
...then, but things have been trending the wrong direction in Richmond for 3-4 years.
