Any VT engineering alumni here? Any thoughts on the engineering department.
Just wondering your thoughts on the current status of the College of Engineering. Is it attracting and holding onto good professors? Is it able to attract top students? Does it seem to have any current agendas that are taking away from the college? Will Mitchell Hall be a game changer for some departments within the college? What would be the best thing the college could do now to produce better engineering students? Any thoughts on the College would be appreciated. I am not involved with the college, but very interested in its "progress", under the current dean. Really would like to hear the opinions of others. I have this dream that someday it will be able to compete (be recognized with) the likes of Purdue, Illinois, GT, Cornell, and others. That is a big order. Not that US News rankings are all so accurate, but according to them, the college is being passed by many other university engineering programs. TIA

Virginia Tech College of Engineering graduate from NC State or Clemson College of Engineering graduate at least that is how it is in the Carolinas. We may think we are special but employers see us all as coming from good schools. As a VT Engineering graduate myself, in many instances, I find the Clemson and NC State Engineers more personable and easy to work with probably because I grew up in Western Virginia and not NOVA. In last 25 years, I also have hired more NC State people than any other college and they have all been very good to excellent and I have found a few Virginia Tech grads to have personalities similar to a computer chip.

Never had to represent a VT grad.
But Iâve used a few as experts to help win for the ones I have represented. Virginia jurors nod when I qualify them and hit their education.
And they make great witnesses. Can explain engineering so a McDonaldâs cashier can understand it.

We hire, on average, 20 Hokies each year into full-time, intern or co-op positions. But, mostly intern or co-op, to start (with the intent of moving them to full-time). Mostly ME's, EE's and IE's.
I can say that very few of the Hokies we bring in for internship / co-op don't excel and get the nod for a full-time offer. These kids interview really well, sharing some great experiences they're getting in the classroom, in labs and via extracurriculars they're finding in Blacksburg.
I can't offer much perspective on the faculty / department leadership but the caliber of the student coming out of the program(s) is very strong.

They were challenged in classes by the material and forced to learn. They were not handed "A's", unlike other programs that I'm aware of -- just to produce students with high GPA's.
They also have a lot of prominent employers recruiting at the school. And they had their choice of job offers at high salaries.
As a parent I care about the two things above -- not rankings.

I should never have included anything about rankings as that seems to have thrown off what I am after. Your opinion is that things are good in engineering and that is what I want to see in the replies. I read a lot about the different engineering programs in the US and am trying to get a better feel for the VT program. one example (how quickly they are adapting the program for the education of students in new technologies and manufacturing). Thanks for your reply.

VT looked at what it takes to increase its profile etc. The pdf started the process. VT is not necessarily trying to get AAU, but is looking at their criteria. Please note a lack of med school was hurting VT AAU chances. We are trying to get more research dollars and become more globally recognized. There is also a push to increase the size of the student body.
I think all that helps along with VT in Northern Virginia where they hire VT engineers like mad.
