If he is willing Yes VTSCOOP reported this news over the past few days, and it has now been confirmed by CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz: James Franklin is targeting former Virginia Tech head coach Brent Pry for the Hokies’ defensive coordinator position. ** Edited by 134083Hokie at 12/7/2025, 9:08:53 AM ** Edited by 134083Hokie at 12/7/2025, 9:09:35 AM

Has anyone been able to REALLY confirm this?

and if it doesn’t work out?
Will Franklin fire his friend from VT (again?) Or he will ride or die with him, like Fuente and Corny? It strikes me as an emotional decision, not a strategic one. (Spare me the “Franklin knows better.” That goes without saying. Doesn’t mean he’s infallible, and the rest of us can’t have concerns.)

will he have to move?
his contract would be pretty easy to negotiate ** Edited by bigbadbird at 12/7/2025, 9:36:03 AM

High risk move by Franklin if true. Very high risk.
Only real mitigation I can see is financial: hire him as coordinator to avoid the buyout. If the D goes south however, it will an unmitigated disaster that all the good will he’s built up in his first offseason will evaporate. Very, very, very, very high risk move for a CEO style head coach that’s been incredibly planned and calculated so color me skeptical.

Agreed. If Pry can’t get his s***’together and this goes south
or is just mediocre, this will be unpleasant for everybody.

I don't believe "avoiding buyout" factors in at all...if Pry is hired that
might be some negotiation as to current pay structure, but Pry is gonna get paid the buyout regardless

Disagree - High risk would be hiring someone you have never worked with
before and that you don't know personally. He's more familiar with Pry capabilities than you, I or anyone on this board. If defense goes south you fire him and hire a new DC. They're big boys and both understand that going in. Money saved can go towards NIL or where ever it's needed. It's a win win, and actually genius ! ** Edited by uber hokie at 12/7/2025, 3:57:09 PM

So Pry gets fired 2 years in a row vs a fresh start? That’s low risk to u?

I don't actually see it as high risk....
It wasn't that long ago that Pry was a very good DC. I get the feeling that Pry needs to be pushed to be his best, and I think Franklin will do that. My only concern is that Pry may have too much of an emotional attachment to his guys on the roster going forward to make the changes that we need to get better.

I get that POV but that’s ignoring the risk of the downside
If you listen to Dave Ramsey, he always talks about how people get involved with businesses and investments because they only look at the upside of it. It feels good. Endorphins release. We’re going to be rich! Or in this case the D will be top 10! Ok, that’s the upside. The downside is things go poorly. Pry’s confidence is shaken by the last 4 years. Key players get hurt. Youth doesn’t live up to their ratings quickly. All real possibilities that if Brent Pry is sitting in the DC chair with around his neck, it’s a disaster and he’ll have to be fired. Immediately. The question is what’s the likelihood of the various outcomes as the impact is very high. Can’t buy into this move without guardrails.

Guardrails. Maybe a “Prove it”’contract?
Give him a 2 yr contract with no buy-out! Players do this is MLB all the time. ** Edited by VT ChemE 1986 at 12/7/2025, 10:57:56 AM

Or Pry could be very motivated
to prove he is a top Defensive Coordinator. He may accept the fact that he is not head coach worthy but work his ass off to show he knows defense. The current players may accept him as DC even if they didn’t embrace him as the head honcho. A couple of things mentioned could happen to any DC, such as key players getting hurt or young players not living up to their ratings. Pry had some top 10 defenses at PSU, which was the main reason he was hired by VT. I trust Franklin to make it work.

Franklin and Pry are in the same boat. Each was just fired.
Franklin understands exactly how Pry is feeling.

I can win a billion dollars in the lottery & put 8 figures in NIL too…
It could happen and that would be great. We’d all be very happy about it but what’s the probability of it happening? If I don’t consider the latter I’d make a lot of stupid decisions. Pry being a good DC is obviously not as remote as me winning the lottery but I’m not putting it at any better than 50/50 if he comes back to VT w/25-75 being more likely. A lot of professional demons for him to exercise at VT making a spiral down more likely than success. Not an anchor I’d think Pry would want to saddle Franklin with out of the gate.
