SMU and possibly the Hoos will also
be favored over the Hokies. I think the Hoos are a little like the Hokies-TBD.

Actually the opposite is true.
βA recent analysis of the NIL era reports that donations directly to public colleges (including athletics) have increased by about 40% (recently), indicating that overall giving into the college sports ecosystem has risen rather than fallen. [sportsbusinessjournal]

Apparently people who could or actually do donate to
VT athletics donβt really want to compete with the big dogs in the ACC. Clemson receives about $30M more per year for athletics from donors. Roll out all the excuses (and many are very legitimate) but at the end of the day (year?) Hokie giving is much lower than it needs to be to consistently compete at the highest levels in the ACC. Unfortunately it has been that way for years. Let the arrows fly!
And yes, I did double my usual annual contribution after Franklin was hired.

Also the 2009 win over Miami
Hokies were ranked #11 and Canes were #9. It rained the entire game but watching Ryan Williams run for 150 yds that day made it worth it. Final- VT won 31-7 and jumped into the top 10. How I miss those days when the Hokies played on the national stage and had some great teams.

Good article overall but some of these predictions,
like a possible 10 win season are wildly optimistic. The most reasonable predictions account for a new coaching staff, a few positions with big question marks (O line, safeties, LB) and the relative youth of the Hokies roster. 8-4 or 7-5 would be great progress compared to last season. Youth normally means inconsistency so we should expect that. OTOH would love to see 1 or 2 upsets since itβs been a while.

That may have been Franks philosophy but
Woody Hayes is credited with saying it first. I remember the quote being attributed to Jerry Claiborne and he definitely did not like to throw the ball.

Thatβs brutal, but to his credit
his overall grade was 56.6 (and he is relatively young). Seems like maybe he was pretty good at other things. Not knowing how different skills are weighted but that overall grade might indicate he is good at pass protection. If he has the physical skills, tackling can be improved with the right coaching. A project for Coach Pry.

AI had this tidbit on PFF grades for the 2025 O line
βVirginia Tech's 2025 offensive line struggled per PFF grades, with low marks in pass and run blocking (e.g., 45.2 run, 51.1 pass), hindering the offense despite a mobile QB.β
Wow! If those grades are anywhere near the actual play then Moore has one hell of a job to make this O line into a good one.

Would rather the Hokies play JMU than VMI.
JMU would be more competitive but VT would prevail if the team plays to its new level of talent. VMI will be a yawner.

See On3 rankings for a completely different take
They have VT ranked as the #5 team in the transfer portal. They show a very nice upgrade for incoming talent for the Hokies. And their rankings do not include Luke Reynolds (5*), Ethan Grunkemeyer (4*) and Bryce Baker (4*).

Agree on a true freshman QB
But I believe Franklin should go all in on 2026 to maintain the momentum/hype surrounding his hire and the A+ recruiting class. If the Hokies are 7-5 next year a lot of that excitement is lost and the trajectory of the program is then seen as possibly in doubt to many (mostly the uneducated or those expecting a CFP team next year). With transfer portal and NIL many will expect instant success, whether that is practical or not.

He would be a gamble and maybe worth it for a backup option.
His rating is only 111 against the one P4 team (Auburn) he played against. A big part of that could be due to large difference in talent between the two schools. His overall rating is not bad. He needs to be evaluated by a coach.

Not really what he said but if thatβs what he meant
there are 2 βnewβ players in the portal, not one. Of course, many more will announce by January 2.

247 shows 7 VT players in the portal
Let me know if Iβm wrong.

Looks like Spencer can recruit also.
This year three 4 star players with average rating of 94.2. His lifetime recruiting list is unbelievable! Not only DL but also WR, QB, RB, and OL.
This would be huge if it happens! A real βsplashβ hire!

Paviaβs agent likely told him to apologize. His post and the sore loser
attitude would not impress many NFL scouts. They like drama free athletes who produce results on the field versus creating controversy on social media. I liked watching him play and can sympathize with him, but he needs to act like an adult.

Stayed in the top 10 quite a while! Still in the top 20 thru 2024,
even after a big slide down the last few years. Interesting!

Not a lot of high quality QBs in portal now
but expect more QBs will enter by portal opening day. If not those top QBs will definitely command top $$$$.

9 but could change drastically depending
on coaching staff hires and players we get from the portal.

PSU not slipping in D rankings
after Pry left doesnβt mean he wasnβt a good DC lol. That means the DC(s) who replaced him were just as good, including Knowles (ex Ohio State DC who is seen as a top DC in the industry, but difficult to work with). PSU is known for solid defenses and Pry was part of that. If you change jobs and the person who replaces you is just as good, does that mean you did a bad job? Poor logic.
Football Board

Not repeating the same formula at all. So many on this board cannot accept
the fact that Pry was a terrible HC but was a good DC at Penn State. The two positions are drastically different. Like it or not, Franklin will probably bring other coaches from Happy Valley who he knows and who he believes can get the job done. That is very common. Just check all the new coaches and note how many bring βtheir guysβ to the new school. PSU had good teams almost every year he was there, so I trust Franklin to assemble the best staff and really not concerned with what people on this board think about his assistant coaching hires.
Football Board

It is common for coaches to take part of their staff to new jobs.
Pry was with Franklin for years, so it makes sense. We will probably see other PSU coaches move to Blacksburg as Matt Campbell brings his staff to State College. Part of the carousel.

Sorry if already posted. Rumors are Dan Connor
PSU LB coach to VT. Heβs a very well respected LB coach in the industry.

Or Pry could be very motivated
to prove he is a top Defensive Coordinator. He may accept the fact that he is not head coach worthy but work his ass off to show he knows defense. The current players may accept him as DC even if they didnβt embrace him as the head honcho.
A couple of things mentioned could happen to any DC, such as key players getting hurt or young players not living up to their ratings. Pry had some top 10 defenses at PSU, which was the main reason he was hired by VT. I trust Franklin to make it work.

I know at least one major Hokie donor who lives in Blacksburg.
He has contributed over $2M to athletics over the years, which seems like small potatoes compared to the MSU gift, but it has had a big impact at VT. Another Blacksburg friend I suspect is also giving big $$$$ but it is none of my business to ask him. So there are a few major donors who live in the Burg.
There may not be any Hokie billionaires (?) but we have our fair share of big contributors. You are correct that those kind of people want to see the money invested wisely. Seems like the new plan is a big improvement.

According to 247 the Hoos bought 31 players in the portal
including three 4 star players on top of Chandler Morris (who was only rated 3 stars).

Sent a new donation (above my normal) the day after CJF was hired.
And as things unfold and we see more good things develop (with football and the Athletic Dept reorganization), I plan to give more. It was definitely hard to pony up based on results the past few years. Now it seems like there will be a more solid ROI.
