that needs to be made clear, it is a contribution but, it is a bequest not an outright cash gift or pledge at present. This is not belittling the gift, $40 million is real money but, it is not immediate or even near term cash flow barring an unfortunate turn of events for the donor.

It's Colgate Darden School of Business PERIOD. one of the top business schools in the country.
VT focus is technology, and our graduates are much younger, entrepeuner and will make their fortune later and it will be in technology. So many are either in DMV or Austin or California or Seattle TECHNOLOGY HUBS
We all know if UVA ever totally engaged their potential contributor base to just write checks, they would be the wealthiest in the ACC and one of the top in the nation on pure dollars. BUT THEY CHOSE NOT TOO.....

Nobody graduating from Darden cares about UVA athletics, it’s the same story at graduate programs around the country.
Also you make way more money going there for undergrad than grad school, NYC finance and consulting are saturated by UVA, UNC, and Duke grads

Gobblers, of course The University being an excellent school is a major
factor in the wealth of our graduates. However, do not discount the impact of a Trust Fund into the potential wealth accumulation of Cavaliers. As young UVA graduates first enter the work force the Trust Fund helps with the essentials in life such as a German automobile, a vacation home, Country Club membership, and Private Schools for the children. Later in life as we enter the peak earning years the Trust Fund is not needed most of the time. That money can just sit and accumulate almost unnoticed. It becomes an excellent source of potential donations to causes like the VAF. Wahoo Wah!!!

Which is why we underperform in that area. We should have full-time fundraising/alumni relations staff in the Bay Area and New York. That's where the big money is located. We also need more focus on Texas, Colorado and Florida. Every dollar spent on hiring a good fundraiser should bring in at least $5 per year, yet VT can't seem to hire enough or hold on to the ones we do hire.

Based on 2019 records. VCU = $2B, Liberty $1.58B, VT = $1.35B

Until recently the university and athletics were separate efforts. Did u know until this year there were different databases for individual giving??
Brad warthmun group and vt development is workimg to have only 1 integrated database . However this is hard and duplicate tecords for over 30-50 thouaand entities

reach for the top. We are great at putting people into careers that get them into the upper middle class. We come up short at producing super-wealthy alumni (>$100 million). We have some, but not as many as we should given the size of our alumni base.

grandparents keeping elitism alive and well. Special finishing schools for their kids too. UVA likely qualifies here.

from Princeton University in 1986 with a degree in "Computer Science and Electrical Engineering" which VT offers. Interestingly, Elon Mush graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 with a double undergrad major in "Economics and Physics". He has since become openly anti-establishment education saying “you can learn anything you want for freeâ€.

Schaub was the only one I can think of who might have made multiples of $40 million playing football.
Of course it could have been anyone who invested in BitCoin early.

Once you really look into it. NFL players do get paid a lot....but not enough to write a check that large. I don't think most NFL players ever acquire a net worth of 40 million or more. But that doesn't mean that athletes aren't business savvy. Guys like Magic Johnson and Roger Staubauch just seem to have a knack for business.
