With Giltner moving on, how will Asst Coaches responsibilities change?
I saw Giltner with dry erase board during games more than others on staff. Who will be x's/o's guy during games? Byars for O and Frazier for D? Or, Young grabs the board and does most of doodling?

A SUPER Big lose for CMY, Gilter was his "right-hand man" #1 Asst.

Seems like he drew up a lot of the set plays.

Don't worry, we'll find somebody else to pop his popcorn.

He's the No. 3 assistant behind Frazier (1) and Byers (2).

I get it
But visually to the casual fan, in game, he appeared to have an elevated role. That said should be little effect. Xs and Os isn't a program problem. No doubt Frazier is the top dawg now.

Depends who they hire...
Giltner's biggest role was that he was a consistent presence across MYs tenure that allowed more voices to relay the system to the players. He knew MYs system very well having spent over a decade in it You're not going to 1:1 replace someone like that so you'll need to address other areas and then lean on the fact that neither Byers nor Frazier are brand new to the system. One option would be to promote Ace Custis. Hes been with MY for a while now. But is he ready for the added responsibility on the road recruiting and putting together scouting reports? He may very well be, I dont know. Giltner recruited North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Florida...Florida can be handed off to Byers, but youre gonna need someone with connections to the others. Im not sure VT can survive without a presence in those states. If MY actually is thinking about retirement in the next ~2 years then the hire might reflect that. Someone he has been wanting to give an opportunity to might find their way to VT even if they might not fit the above criteria. Regardless, I think Byers and Frazier will stay coaching guards and wings. Whoever the new person is will get post players and MY will be hands-on there. I would not view Giltner's departure as dire...but it would benefit recruiting and the perspective of outside families of recruits for the new hire to be a person of color

Thoughts on making move on Mike Boynton? Michigan currently pays him $300k
When he was fired from OK State 2 years ago I thought it would be a great move to bring him on board given his relationship with Mike Young. Clearly he can recruit, just wasn't able to muster up enough wins in stillwater. If CMY is actually considering retirement in 2-3 years, that could be part of the sales pitch to him. Not saying that's who I would want as the next HC, & I would prefer CMY *NOT retire & keep coaching a few more years, just some thoughts...

you be talkin’ bout
Cattoor ? remembering the video of CMY dissing HC as the worst, most undisciplined player he ever coached. that was funny; HC as asst coach would be fun. ** Edited by HtownHokie at 9/22/2025, 6:35:24 PM
