Would yall consider jayden young a p4 talent or mid major?
genuinely curious, I’m on the side of mid major because of his inconsistency and lapses on defense this past season. I do think he can improve but it took him all season to get his shot going in consistently.

Think the Young slander is a bit misplaced
I think the biggest issue for Young/VT was it just not a great fit for a MY system. A MY team excels through efficiency, if your tempo isn’t going to be crazy and you work to get a shot, that shooter needs to be efficient, and Jayden Young wasn’t that. He reminds me a ton of a tad smaller Marial Shayok of UVA from the late 2010s for UVA/Bennett. A lot of the same mismatching parts. Shayok could slash and get to his spot, but wasn’t great at finishing, but man when he hit his shots, he had 15 in 5 minutes. Shayok was an in between player in UVAs “sides” offense, wasn’t great on the catch and shoot and wasn’t terribly efficient at the rim. Then he goes to Iowa St and begins to have 25 point games in a system that allowed more iso-attack than UVA. The fit with unc I think is simple, he’s going to be 10-15 minutes off the bench with a green light to go. And that fits. Is he a starter? No. But as a 4-5th guard, he has incredible value to me. Would that value ever have been recognized by a MY system, probably no. Not really a bad thing, just a guy that wasn’t going to fit for VT and needed a change of scenery. Just bc he went “up” to unc doesn’t mean VT now lost a supreme talent.

He was a great fit for the system

My guess is Young is a piece that will be counted on early for bench
minutes while Isaiah Denis and Derek Dixon develop (especially Denis). Dixon is better than Young imo. Denis needs to get bigger and stronger but he is probably a better shooter than Young. I’m not sure who Young is. I don’t think he will be the guy that we saw vs Miami and Syracuse (they were horrible defensive teams). And I don’t think he is the shameless 0-11 gunner we saw vs California in the tournament. As for UNC NIL I would guess he’s getting a free education and a few perks so it’s a no risk take on their part. I believe CMY felt we needed to get better than him and Rech and he told Young as much.

I thought he had a bright future. Was sorry to see him go.
Will we have enough players to field a team if we have a few injuries next season?

We just got another commit..

Many "P4" players do the same things you are highlighting. Not being...
...all conference or a full-time starter doesn't mean you are not a "P4" player.

We went 13-18…
I understand where you’re coming from, I wasn’t clear in my definition of talent.. Just my opinion that I think he’d thrive at a mid major

Lots of P4 talents would thrive at mid-majors...

you are asking the wrong people to evaluate athletic talent

He showed flashes. But I would say low P4 or high mid-major. Along the
Lines of MJ Collins and Maddox.

Quick question...
Has Jaydon Young played any minutes at the non-p4 level?

Quick question…
did I ever say he played mid major? I ask if he was a mid major talent.. as a former or current coach you should be able to evaluate at this level against any competition. ** Edited by Hokies0725 at 4/25/2025, 8:52:00 PM

Makes no difference to you or any poster on this board. UNC believes he's
a P4 talent and that's all that matters.

GCHokie34
He was a starter at an ACC school...
If he stays with UNC for 2 years his entire career will be at the P4 level Yes...he's a P4 talent ** Edited by GCHokie34 at 4/25/2025, 8:57:21 PM

So riding the bench at a blue blood makes you a p4 talent?
he lost his starting job here.. wish nothing but the best for the kid but that was a missed evaluation by this coaching staff

You from the future?

Mid major he does not have hardly any arc on his jump shot very
inconsistent shooter.

If that is the barometer, then there are only a handful of P4 players

Neither did Dell Curry

In the past, he transfers to a MM to get PT. Now, the 9th man makes more $
At a unc than a top 2-3 player at a MM…another gamechanger.
