Whats next?
I think no matter how you slice it, the DNG transfer had to happen. I think the staff held out as long as they could hoping to gain clarity around the 4/5 spots but you cant go into next season with DNG as the starter, you cant turn away Reid or Basile, and it would be unfair to DNG to push him out after May 1.
To me, this signals that we wont hear about a commitment (to VT or elsewhere) from Basile/Reid until after May 1.
OR it means theyve both already committed, which is much less likely.
I think VT views John Camden as what they wanted DNG to be. Someone who could play both 3 and 4 due to length and shooting ability. DNG could really shoot it out of HS, and I really hope he regains that touch. A new scene will hopefully do wonders for his confidence. He just couldnt put together in the game what was seen in practice. Baby KD never came to fruition.
VTs roster at 4/5 had DNG stayed
4 - Mutts or portal replacement/DNG/Camden
5 - Basile/Reid/Kidd/DNG
If you look at the 4 spot, someone who can stretch the floor like Camden would only be a matter of time before he passed DNG (as long as Camden picks up the system). Then DNG is buried deep at both spots.
The alternative is that VT doesnt take both Basile and Reid....so who do you say no to? Choosing DNG over either would be a mistake.
The third option would be missing out on one or the other (or both)...and thats why I think we wont hear until after May 1, because if you think either will choose another school prior to then, then you absolutely bring DNG back.
Id bet the door isnt shut on DNG, but it probably depends on whether VT gets Mutts, Basile and Reid.
I think VT is done with losing players. Now it is time for additions. Would love to see VT get Mutts, Reid, Basile and a wing. If so, this could be the deepest and most MY-esque team of his (albeit short) tenure

Replace:
Aluma —- (Basille?)
Mutts —- (Mutts or other 4?)
Upgrade:
DNG —- Camden
Ojiako —- (Reid?)
Allenye —- (new wing who is actually a 3)
If Camden was the Mutts replacement and DNG stayed, we aren’t as good as we would be if Camden replaced DNG.

it is the rare case in any sport, particularly basketball, where you redshirt nowadays. The transfer situation is too volatile to waste a year and scholarship money if a kid has a chance to contribute in any way.

Interesting comment on Wessler
Do you believe he just needs time to adjust to the college game, or do you not see him as a contributor ever?

Though Tyrece Radford might not have been an academic case.

Not sure about Radford though.

With his ratings and experience he would not accept a red shirt
there are 10 P5 teams that would take him right now with promise of 10 minutes a game

Hes going to do everything he can to make it professionally. Thats always been the case. He can still come back. I hope he doesnt, because that means he has realized his dream.
Regardless, they would add someone before relying on DNG at the 4

Pardon my ignorance re pro ball
does he get to play in summer league sanctioned by nba and still come back? Or does he just get to do workouts with select teams?

If not, then Camden and Buchanan will be rushed into action. You *could* slide Basile over to the 4, but that would gove you some matchup issues in conference play, so you might as well get those guys ready.
