And getting into those salaries a little bit more...

Frazier is the top basketball assistant at Illinois, and he makes $720k. Their long-time head baseball coach, who has been there since 2006, makes $400k, so just over half of what the top basketball assistant makes. At Tech, that is flipped. The baseball coach makes $600k, while Mike Jones, as the top assistant for men's basketball, made $360k (I'm not sure what Byers makes, but I assume it's about the same). So just over half of what the head baseball coach makes, so it's the direct opposite. So, the priorities are flipped between the two schools. That's what people are talking about when they talk about providing Mike Young with more resources. And I'm not saying that baseball shouldn't be getting those kind of resources. As a sport, baseball was my first love as a kid. I'm just saying that Illinois has decided what their priority is in terms of men's basketball vs. baseball. And they are a good team that is making the Big Dance every year. We aren't in a position to where we can be good at everything. We have to prioritize. And I don't think our current basketball prioritization, compared to some of the non-profit sports, is where it should be. I must emphasize that is only my opinion. It's my opinion that men's basketball should be the No. 2 priority behind football. It technically is in terms of total dollars spent, but when you compare it to what other schools are doing (such as the Illinois comparison), it's not.

I think Women recruits are closer to being true student athletes than men

In my college teaching experience that is completely true

So women’s families prioritize family and men’s families don’t as much? **
HoodatB 03/14/24 01:37 PM ET
Not all, but I believe some do, parents tend to protect daughters more ..

Perhaps VT should cut back on number of sports if $$ is an issue
40ozDistrict 03/14/24 01:04 PM ET
That isn't as easy as it might sound. Reductions in sports would likely
mghokie 03/14/24 02:26 PM ET
Keep FB, Basketball, Wrestling, Track, then the 4 cheapest of the rest.
