Never felt ill will when he left
Couldn't turn down OU. Today it would be a harder decision with the improvements made.

Very gracious comments.
Sounds like Mark (Berman) didn't get into asking Hughes why he left, or he did and Pete refused to answer. That's fine. He did a great job in Blacksburg, but English Field in particular was pretty Mickey-Mouse when he was here. If I remember correctly, they had to bring in trailers to accommodate the press for the 2013 regional. Attendance at that regional was also pretty poor. After a great crowd of 3,600+ for the first game (Friday), attendance dropped to 1,800 for the Saturday game, then 1,200 for both Sunday games. Probably didn't help that VT lost the Friday game to UConn.

Collegiate Times summary about him leaving
Tech paid Hughes $157,437 in 2012. Galloway's salary at Oklahoma was around $350,000, and it's expected that Hughes will be receiving similar pay. “There are certain institutions in certain conferences that have certain reputations for having unlimited resources and things of that nature, Weaver said. “To ice the cake, they flew the family out on Toby Keith’s jet.” Oklahoma’s baseball prestige was also a point in their favor. Tech’s baseball program has just started to grow with the help of Hughes, while the Sooners have won the College World Series before, been to the NCAA tournament every year since 2007 and been to Omaha 10 times.

Oklahoma was a better baseball job
with facilities and reputation, but if I remember correctly, the money was astronomical compared to what he was making here.

Dont u think Coach Weaver and Whit have different priorities?
Will Stewart Will Stewart
I remember Bill Roth saying Weaver was a baseball fan.
But I also remember that Weaver was really, really good with money. He prioritized football over everything. He built the baseball indoor facility, but I'm not sure he ever would have done with the stadium what Whit has done.

The other question I would ask regarding his time here is
How in the heck do you pass on Chris Taylor as a HS recruit ?!? That should have been a no brainer as VT baseball coach Sorry - that has always irritated me...

He didn't pass on Chris.
Chris wanted to play at UVA. Chris' dad stayed out of Chris' decision. That is the story that I got from someone that knows Chris' dad.

Yep. I talked with JD about this yesterday.
With the new code base, uploading more than one photo isn't trivial. He can make it happen and will make it happen, but it's not high up the priority list. The out-and-out bugs need to be fixed first.

Great article
Thanks for sharing. I remember the 2010 and 2013 teams well, especially the 2013 team when we almost knocked off Carolina in the ACC Championship game and later on hosted a Regional. I will root for Pete’s success at Kansas State and hope he does a good job there - except for today, lol.

Pete really did a great job here at VT.....showed how to win with a.....
severely under resourced program (and not far removed from coming out of the Big East). The teams we had in 2010 and 2013 were pretty strong, and to compete like we did against the schools in our league was admirable, to say the least. It would have been interesting to see him with the current resources (both facility and monetarily), but things have a way of working out. Had Pete known what was eventually coming, I don't think he would have left VT. We now have a completely different model here, but can look back to Pete's time here with appreciation, and we can be thankful we now have the staff in place that we do.

What do you mean had he known was was eventually coming?
Didn't Szefc build it?
