Posting History (450)

I’m paying it 2x now with two kids at VT

And it sucks. I was an ardent opponent whenever this came up. But two things: 1. At least it’s gone up gradually. 2. My son is a junior and loves VT football and says he’s done with it post grad if they don’t get it together. My daughter is a freshman and is worried her friend group won’t bother to get season tix next year. The success of the football team is a critical element to at least my kids college experience. My son says he’s happy to pay more fee. So yea, it’s a tax but it’s also not unfair.

They did a nice job allowing the returning players to be the

…complementary pieces they are. That was my complaint last year, it was a team of complementary players with no one to complement. Now with Neo and Hansbury and maybe even Pasha, the parts fit together.

And I think they got a number of “no thank you” in their search

Key is effectively a glorious mistake. They got a new AD during the search, Collins had burned the program to the ground like he was Sherman. GT didn’t get much interest so they gave Key a $2.9mm (!!) contract that would be easy to buy out so they could get their org straightened out and shop again. Then he got good. ** Edited by st_andrew at 9/23/2025, 1:54:42 PM

There were some patterns at Auburn

….like running QB usage and TE snaps that may translate to VT but probably won’t because Freeze was in charge of the offense. Nothing about that year at Auburn matched Montgomery’s history.

Underrated: non call on Justin Hamilton PI late in Pitt ‘03

Win that Pitt game and ‘03 could have had totally different finish.

Yep. WVU led to ND loss. Beat ND and we are 5-0 with wins over UNC, WVU, ND

Pitt still steamrolled us but we are probably top 10 at that point.we prob finish with 9+ wins. Fuente survives season, 2022 disaster never happens, etc.

Feels like Free Fallin’ for me, but we didn’t get cable until1989

First video I ever saw was Centerfold by the J Giles Band on a show on Saturday nights that had like 30 Mins of music videos. I remember “I Love Rock n Roll” on that show too.

You get the best guy for the job. Jon Scheyer wasn’t a HC.

In fact, I’m pretty sure every good head coach became a head coach once without any head coaching experience.

I’m wondering

…if MY lured him back because he outlined a short (2-season?) period before retiring and CF taking over. Bookmark this in case it comes true I want full credit in the pod!

Bennett is the most well rounded of the three

Much better pass catcher, more TDs and equal yards with less carries than Stewart and played better competition at Coastal

I drive it 100 miles a day. I’m pretty efficient passing on the right

Pro tip: stay in right lane on Afton Mtn. Too many people in left lane, it slows down slower than the trucks on the right.

I’m kicking myself for not seeing this coming.

I guess I bought into Buzz’s “Texas is home” BS. Just a reminder to never believe what Buzz Williams says. But why didn’t he “get involved” at Nova or Indiana? Apparently Willard thinks Nova is a better gig than UMD. I think it’s debatable but Willard would know better than anyone. And Buzz pushed behind scenes for Indiana (and OSU) when he was here. UMD is just poor man’s Indiana IMO.

Willard was openly complaining about his AD and school funding last week

He’s trying to get a new contract and the AD is leaving (?) but still, it sounded like a dude ready to jump ship. Leaving as Queen leaves also smart.

Losing Pedulla and then Miller put too much on him.

If he’d been a 7-10 minute guy this year, he could have grown and built confidence. Bad confluence of events limited his growth at VT

You might be right but those first two reasons don’t compel me.

Geography in recruiting: how many North Carolinians are on Duke, UNC or NCSUs team? How many Virginians are on VT or UVAs team? VT has one, Hammond, that I can think of. I’m d be surprised if any of those teams have more than 3-4 in state kids. It’s just not important in hoops recruiting. Raleigh Vs CVille are very different. I work in both markets and they are just different things to offer. For every negative you can think of Raleigh, a basketball player may see a bigger metro as a significant advantage. I asked because historically, they are very similar programs. But they are very different. Kinda arrived at the same historical result from opposite paths. I’d lean UVA because they have strong brand, money and facility advantages with a strong hoops following. But, frankly, uva has a lot of those advantages often and haven’t figured out to consistently use them for the rev sports.

Paige highlights the real struggle

Of how woman with big tatas are able to swing the golf club.

WF, Vandy and ND all had elements that were referenced.

NDs had an awesome indoor chipping barn. The UVA buildings coaches offices are amazing. Bowen and Kim (at the time) were embarrassed when the EVP of UVA said they were bigger offices than his and bigger and better offices than any coach at UVA had.

I’d also question whether Ballyhack

….is representative enough to better prepare men’s players. It’s hard, no doubt, but it’s also tricked up to get that hard. There are a handful of holes that don’t feel real. Greens and fairways that are fantastical. It’s hard but not hard in the appropriate ways to help you win in Norman OK.

I think Pry was the only one he ever promoted from within as well.

A lot of pushback on Dex for getting passed over 2x (3x?) by Franklin, but I think it’s rare at that elite program level to promote from within and more rare with Franklin. Clemson did it a few times, once with Elliott to some success and once that failed with the DC they just fired.
