July trivia results
July was a great month for santafe. In the most difficult question category, santafe got OBP and BB’s as two categories where Hank Aaron was not the all-time Braves’ leader after two hours and 46 minutes. In the most correct answers category, he won going away with six correct answers. Stork took the place position with three correct answers, while Va AandM, vawter85, Spud and UTPr0sim tied for the show position with two each.

It was used by Wendell Wilkie, FDR’s 1940 Presidential opponent. FDR was the first to run for a third term. FDR never claimed that he was indispensable, but his supporters at least hinted at it. The slogan did not help Wilkie, nor did a similar line of attack help Thomas Dewey in 1944.

Belgian rider Remco Evenopoel won both the Stage 15 time trial and the Stage 16 mountain stage on his way to second place in the general classification. Belgian Jasper Philipsen then won the Stage 17 flat race on his way to second place in the sprinter competition. Belgium had a total of four stage wins, second only to Slovenia (5). France had zero stage wins.

The Kansas Turnpike, from Kansas City to the OK state line, was built between 1954 and 1956. The KT originally ended at a T-intersection with a gravel road at the OK state line. The most famous of many crashes there involved Wyoming Governor Milward Simpson. Interstate 35 has since solved the problem. Other state turnpikes include Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Ohio and Indiana and Florida. The oldest, the Pennsylvania Turnpike, opened in 1940.

Bob McNeish had played halfback for some great Southern Cal team in the early 1930’s. Evidently, he was one of the many great players who did not become great coaches. His lone win at VT was over Richmond in 1949. He was winless in both 1948 and 1950. His swan song in 1950 was a “perfect” 0-10 record! His replacement, the legendary Frank Moseley, returned VT football to respectability by the mid-1950’s.

The Japanese launched 9300 Fu-Go incendiary balloon bombs. The intent was for them to ride the jet stream across the Pacific to start forest fires. Of the 9300 launched, only about 300 reached North America. They did pose a bit of a threat, and the war department decided to keep their arrivals out of the news to keep the info about their arrivals out of Japanese hands. The ill-fated civilians encountered one of these bombs in the forest in Oregon.

Somewhere around 130,000 Italian soldiers surrendered to somewhere around 35,000 British soldiers. You are correct. Aaron had 96 career triples. He is second on

HA, Chipper Jones, and Eddie Matthews are the top three in almost all (perhaps all) of those categories for the Braves. Chipper is the leader in walks and on base %. Aaron leads the other nine. Because there is so much film of HA when he was older and comparatively little when he was leaner and younger, people tend to forget that he stole 240 bases in his career, all of which were as a Brave.

I got to experience the swift water first hand.
I was paddling my canoe through the rapids on the north side of Belle Island, when I missed my brace and flipped. I swam almost to the end of Belle Island before I could recover the canoe. It was a scary swim, and I know how to swim!

With an estimated 90% of Civil War soldiers not knowing how to swim, Belle Island was essentially a mini-Alcatraz. It sat in the middle of the James River with swift water on both sides. It was horribly overcrowded, with an estimated 10,000-13,000 prisoners housed there on just 54 acres. The advantage of being imprisoned on Belle Island vs. other prisons was the fresh water supply was less of an issue than it was at other camps.
