The Col de Tourmalet in The Pyrenees is quite a climb (6939 feet), particularly when it is combined with three to four other climbs on the same stage. They climbed it on Thursday, where Tadej Pogacar launched a huge attack to take a big lead in the yellow jersey competition. In addition to being climbed more frequently, the Tourmalet is taller than other famous TDF climbs such as the Alpe d Huez (6100 feet), Mont Ventoux (6300 feet), It is shorter than the Col du Galibier (8700 feet), bu they don't climb the Galibier (almost) every year.

Pre-Dreadnought battleships featured a few big guns and many smaller guns. The British commissioned the Dreadnought in 1906, and it had all 16 inch guns. Guns of that caliber were quickly matched by other navies, making all pre-Dreadnought battleships obsolete.

Mentone has a bypass that was built in 2023! Supposedly, all of the truck traffic to and from the oil fields merited the bypass; however, when I glance at the photos on google/maps, I don’t see any traffic on the bypass and not but so much in the town.

Ben Hogan was 8-12 in playoffs. Playoffs were about the only contests where BH struggled, as his 64 tournament wins are #4 all time (to Woods, Snead and Nicklaus). Nicklaus and Palmer were the only other two double digit playoff losers (10 each). Hogan lost playoffs to ten different golfers, losing twice each to Byron Nelson and Sam Snead. Some of BH’s playoff struggles were attributed to a near fatal 1949 automobile accident, the legacy of which reduced his stamina.

The DVO was a surveying error in the early 1800’s that gave Tennessee an eight mile by one mile area north of 36.5 degrees latitude that should have been part of Virginia. The resulting notch in Virginia’s border (just south of Damascus) remains there to this day, preserved by the US Supreme Court in 1903 in Virginia vs. Tennessee.

No one got Phil Appleby's record-breaking Scrabble word "oxidizers". My mother used to say that a combined 600 points by all contestants was indicative of a well-played game of Scrabble. I had said that the answer had to match exactly, and no one did that; however, both vawter85 and RTFC both clearly knew the area, so I am going to give each of them credit for a correct answer. North Two Ocean Creek is found in the Teton Wilderness of the Bridger-Teton National Forest, located in the northwestern part of the state, south of Yellowstone National Park. It straddles the continental divide. At the “parting of the waters”, the creek appears to split around an island, but what an island it is! It goes all the way to the Panama Canal or the tip of South American if you don’t count canals. Pacific Creek winds up in the Snake River and, in turn, the Columbia River. Atlantic Creek winds up in the Yellowstone River and eventually in the Mississippi River. There is also a South Two Ocean Creek in Two Ocean Pass. Unlike NTOC, STOC only feeds Atlantic Creek.
