Members of the Righteous and Harmonious Fists, nicknamed the Boxers, began an anti-colonial and anti-Christian uprising in China in 1899-1901, called the Boxer Rebellion. They believed that martial arts made them impervious to bullets and fought a losing revolt against an eight nation western alliance. Instead of independence, the western alliance cracked down even harder than they had done before the rebellion.
