The transfer portal exodus surprises and disappoints me

Because I thought CD was/is a players-first coach that brings and encourages fun to the practices and games and she wins. And I wish I had a dollar for all the red-shirt freshmen that don't stay a 2nd year in all sports. Unless its a kid that can get minutes her/his first year, I wouldn't recruit from high school.

Last year at PSU was the perfect storm in a bad way for CF

I don't think that not having a relationship with boosters and the media matters that much. Everything is forgiven and/or tolerated when you win. A coach just has to take care of his team, players and coaches, the rest is fluff. CF is doing a great job at VT. I've never seen recruiting and the transfer portal do as well. But it may take a few years for our program to build up to where he had it at PSU. There, he had great talent all thru the roster, including what most writers thought were the 2 best RBs in the country. Everything was finally in place for PSU to push OSU and Michigan aside. It didn't happen. The powers to be at PSU had a temper tantrum and fired a great coach that landed in our lap. CF and staff are working hard to build our program to be a power but a relationship with boosters and media is second to the team family.

CF got him away from Texas, and all the other blue blood schools!? Awesome!

The RB room will be the greatest ever! Even better than Kevin Jones and Lee Suggs!

Peter Bourque has an interesting throwing style

He doesn't draw back very far before his quick release but he sends a spiral down range with velocity and touch. He can throw on the move rolling out either side and keeps scanning down field to make a throw. He has good size and speed and makes teams pay if they don't respect his running game. CF will need for him to learn to slide or go out of bounds rather than lowering his head and running over defenders. ** Edited by BigDaddyHokie at 5/15/2026, 1:33:14 PM

Yes it is a problem keeping talent on a team when everyone can't start

But yes it is nice to have that problem and we have to trust CF to handle the players. He will show kids the love and advise them that you win the starting job in practice and not on reputation. Me thinks the first part of the season will be tough as the OLine is rebuilt but on D we should be OK with all the talent and speed coming to town.

A great year gals!

I thought we had the perfect recipe this year. 2 strong pitchers where each got time in the circle. Then a small injury to a finger of our #2, our tired #1, and a strong bullpen performance still got us close. ** Edited by BigDaddyHokie at 5/10/2026, 10:19:09 AM

Well with 1 out and the bases loaded and a pitch in the dirt

and a walk to score a run I would have subbed for another pitcher. That's why I'm watching on TV I guess. That home plate ump was inconsistent and made some bad calls IMO.

Curry likes to penetrate and either dish off or score.

Good basketball begets good basketball with certain players. When you have penetrating PGs that love to pass I can see both Hammond and Curry putting pressure on D's together or subbing for each other. Elohim is going to be a beast for us in both the open court or half court.

PG Jaylen Curry from Oklahoma State is coming to VT!

with at least 1 yr of eligibility. He loves to run the floor and lead fast breaks. After you see his highlights you will realize how much he can help us and how upset OKSt is for loosing him.

He is a big 6'5" and seems to have all the tools!

2 6'9" dudes who can play D and score and this brute who wants to penetrate in the paint makes this class great!

Yeah I'm surprised those 2 are leaving too.

I liked 'em both. But if Duffy can find portal players bigger and more athletic to bang in the paint to compete in the ACC then so be it. Same with Kayl. She was decent but not elite potential there either. Swanson was a great shooter but not quick enough for ACC play. ** Edited by BigDaddyHokie at 4/4/2026, 10:47:50 PM

Give him time and he will win.

Don't be the only person not to see this video about Ethan Grunkemeyer.

He was down to earth and a regular guy.

I cold called him one day and he dropped what he was doing and had a nice chat with me. He told me how he came to love VA Tech. His office walls were maroon above the chair railing and burnt orange under it around the room. He was a good sport as his friend's office next door was painted Dark Blue and Orange to honor UVA. RIP Mr. Hokie.

2 things, we always play poorly after a great game, and,

That is the best game shooting the ball by FSU, or any team, I think I have ever seen.

When the competition gets tougher it creates slumps

And when we get into conference play, everything is harder each year.

Dook had a suffocating defense. The best I've seen this year.

The refs let the players play and a physical game was their advantage. With their deep bench, Dook made us start out high and work very hard for most of our baskets. They banged on Neo a lot and it bothered him. Yes and another player-of-the-year on their team.

Advice for coach

We need work on in-bounds plays, clock-eating offense, and against that zone GT used against us. Everybody saw the end of that game. ** Edited by BigDaddyHokie at 1/28/2026, 2:34:42 PM

Anyone else notice that Penn State is 0-9 in conference play?

Mike Rhodes once stated that VCU was his dream job. Then he got that big money offer. And now I'll bet he wishes he had stayed at VCU.

Yes I love the CF hire. One man's trash is another man's treasure

At least recruiting and transfers are more numerous and of higher quality, but no one knows how most kids will do under pressure in a game. And even great QB's look bad when the OLine doesn't give them time or the WRs don't catch passes. That latest batch of highly regarded players at PSU did not pan out and win. Where else in history has the 5th ranked team in the nation fire its head coach the next year during the season?

Now that we have a dynamic recruiter I like the transfer portal

But I would like to see Nick Saban, Dabo and other highly respected coaches for a committee to level out the worst things about the TP.

Clemson lost top LB transfer Luke Ferrelli to Ol' Miss.

He was attending classes and practiced some with the team. Dabo ain't happy.

Hansberry has the best hands and touch since Dale Soloman

Hansberry can do it all, pass, rebound, score with his back to the basket or shoot from distance. Soloman played for VT from 78-82, was 6'9" and around 250 lbs and averaged 18.4 pts a game and scored 2,136 pts.. One reporter described him as looking like a blacksmith in a basketball uniform. ** Edited by BigDaddyHokie at 1/22/2026, 1:24:55 AM

Great game. The refs let 'em play

Indiana won the war. Both teams left it all on the field. I'm not the only one who noticed Miami got away with 3 hits on Mendoza. Reminded me of FSU hitting Vick out bounds those many times. ** Edited by BigDaddyHokie at 1/20/2026, 8:46:39 AM

Mendoza HAS been the most impressive QB this year in all college football

I'm rooting for the ACC team 'Canes but I know who has impressed the most this year.

I hope you're right but our great recruiting class needs time

and most of our transfers, albeit from great programs that recruit top talent, are also young and inexperienced.

I don't care if he tackles poorly against the run

because with track speed he can be like Mark Gastino of the old N Y Jets and just excel at rushing the passer. Gastino got lost on running plays but was brutal hitting QBs.

"He played 57 snaps across six games at right tackle and didn’t allow

a single quarterback pressure," (for Ohio State) according to Pro Football Focus. He is pro size with 3 years eligibility left.
