Not sure sure I'm blaming the Dodgers

It's worth noting that while the players and owners have vehement disagreement on what happens at the top of the payroll, they are in general agreement about two fundamentally important things: 1) Pooling most or all of the TV revenue, even the locals 2) A significantly higher payroll floor Combined, that shifts a huge pile of money from the "haves" to the "have nots", and requires the "have nots" to actually spend it on the players. The subjectively poorer billionaires won't get to cry poverty any longer.

If it's an actual friend

...they are welcome to take responsibility, and Johnny Law will let you off the hook

The Lounge 1 w ago

Went through this last year when I couldn't find tubes for a garage fixture

An old T-12 fixture that came with the house when I bought it. Eventually decided that it wasn't worth the hassle or expense and just bought a new lamp

The Lounge 2 w ago

I'm shocked this doesn't happen more often

Pro sports are smart enough to go nowhere near the NIL nonsense.

The Lounge 1 mo ago

It's not like they are going to announce a "safe" speeding limit

"Well, we put these cameras in but they don't actually getcha until you hit 70." lol

The Lounge 1 mo ago

There's generally a buffer

If they give a ticket at 61 mph then the courts get filled up with people arguing about calibration. If they give a ticket at 11mph over that's a much harder case to make

The Lounge 1 mo ago

Agreed

The good old USofA controlled north of 2/3 of the possession in the first half, while the game was still in doubt. There were some interesting moments in the second half, but strategically I think the Australians were more of a threat to bring it to 2-1 than they ever were to win ** Edited by Beerman at 6/19/2026, 6:58:42 PM

FWIW, the entire notion that HS recruiting is a revenue stream...

...for people who are not actually football professionals is pretty amazing. Talk about making money out of thin air. lol.

The Lounge 1 mo ago

Damn, Richie Rich!

I only got $7.20. They must have mined you good

The Lounge 1 mo ago

Clearly has to be South Africa

It would be a significant upset for them to win, and if Mexico fumbles their group that is only a good thing for the US of A

The Lounge 1 mo ago

The missing name is Clayton Kershaw, but the question is wrong

At 1,000 career innings, Nolan Ryan is 21st in K/9. No fewer than 12 active pitchers rank higher (#1 Blake Snell at 11.2 K/9 over 1,161 INN) At 2,000 career innings, Ryan is #6. Two active pitchers have 2,000+ innings and a higher K/9 and that's Chris Sale and MAx Scherzer To get Ryan to #5 you have to bump the innings total above 2,500 ** Edited by Beerman at 6/11/2026, 9:59:28 AM

CLEARED NIL deals can't include performance incentives

No telling what contracts are out there that no one bothered to push through the clearinghouse

The Lounge 2 mo ago

Try yoga

Seriously. The posterior chain is a hell of a thing. But 15 minutes of deep stretches every morning does wonders

The Lounge 2 mo ago

/shrug

....and no one actually know any of that. Including pundits who make a living preaching doom.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

Local TV deals are going the way of the dinosaur

It's worth noting that both the MLBPA proposal (90%) as well as the Owner proposal (100%) ask for massively pooling media rights deals. Everyone understands that the gravy train days of local RSN contracts are ending. So that part of it is absolutely coming, cap or not.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

The owners' proposal includes a floor, FWIW

...and the players proposal includes substantial increases in the minimum salaries to the lower end players, which is a defacto floor

The Lounge 2 mo ago

The problem is the word "market"

None of the other major sports attempt to recode their owner's reluctance to spend money as a deficiency on the part of the fanbase. Washington is the nation's #8 media market Tampa is #11, and that's ignoring the helpful proximity of #15 Orlando Denver is #17 Miami is #18 Cleveland is #19 Pittsburgh is #27 but doesn't seem to have issues supporting hockey or football. ** Edited by Beerman at 6/2/2026, 4:04:08 PM

Again, the Dodgers are different

Like with the Mets, Dodgers ownership is wealthy even among their peer owners. "Something will have to give somewhere" is a prediction based on balancing operating costs with immediate revenue. That applies to some teams, certainly to those whose owners don't want to put outside money into the club, but not to all of them.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

Surely

"And for organizations that claim to be cash poor, the sale price is paramount to their investment." Yep. This is what many of the small market teams are doing. They claim poverty for the running of day-to-day operations while pretending that the appreciative value of the franchise itself doesn't exist. But again, a broader scope of revenue sharing would reduce the difference between the "rich" and the "poor" clubs, such that it wouldn't matter how much the Dodgers bring in from their Japanaese market deals or the Yankees from their merch sales.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

Deferred salaries often require escrow

The Dodgers aren't just paying for Shohei Ohtani with a credit card. There are contractual requirements about how the money has to be handled to make sure it's really there when it comes due.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

Also...

Also, what the Dodgers are doing is likely sustainable (for them) because of how they've positioned themselves in the market and the revenue streams they've cultivated. But what the Dodgers are doing is not necessarily a thing that every other organization can replicate. A salary cap limits spending. Which is one way that smaller owners can maintain the pace. So would, for example, revenue sharing that tied into spending minimums.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

Big owners vs. Small owners is a thing

Yes. A salary cap is about the owners not trusting each other. It has nothing to do with the players. At all. We, as a nation, do not lack for billionaires desirous of pretty toys. An economic model that could potentially drive out the Bob Nuttings of the world is not an inherently bad thing.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

Arguable

MLB's general competitiveness does not actually align as well with payrolls as the complainers might have you believe. It's just a thing that people like to complain about when their team doesn't win as much as they'd like. The Dodgers spend and win. For sure. But then there's also the Mets.

The Lounge 2 mo ago

Because sports needs rivalries

Travel cost is not insignificant either. Sportsball is ultimately a meaningless and trivial affair. And yet, people derive an awful lot of personal identity from their fandom. Divisional rivalries are a big part of that.

Would you expect him to say something different?

It seems like ROC's firing is an essentially political act, to ensure that the current administration gets a say in the next VT president. It seems like the BOVs changing of its bylaws to rush the appointment of the next VT president before the current administration gets a say in it is an equally policy act. If your basis for determining which is right and which is wrong happens to be your own political beliefs...well...that seems pretty political as well. Which is all fine and good. But people probably shouldn't be getting bent out of shape about the fact of things being political when the actual problem is disagreement with the politics themselves.

Article about it here

BOV changed bylaws to let ROC serve a third term as Rector, seemingly explicitly to get the new President hired before any BOV turnover would occur. Calling him a menace might be a bit much, but it's clear that the outgoing board is trying to get their guy in as President before the sitting Governor's people can have a say in the matter. No idea if that qualifies as "for cause" in a legal sense, but it does seem to be the reason for his ouster If I were to speculate, the above is not the technical reason for the ouster. He probably did do ... something ... in technical violation of some rule or another, which will be used as the pretense for the firing. A firing that may not have occurred if he were willing to allow the hiring process for the new President to await the new composition of the BOV. ** Edited by Beerman at 5/29/2026, 3:13:33 PM ** Edited by Beerman at 5/29/2026, 3:33:52 PM

This doesn't much sound like that

Immediate firing for cause is, at least on the surface, an indication that something specific occurred. As opposed to more prosaic political machinations

100%

Our perceptions are massively skewed by the level of connectedness that exists today, that simply did not 50 years ago. We (as a species) are not well adapted for living in a world where we are being bombarded with everything that happens everywhere all at once. Our natural inclinations that protect us from danger are being overwhelmed by a perceived level of danger wholly out of proportion to the actual risk of things happening to us. And we love it. We want more of it. It is the entire model for 24 hour cable news, and why the people that watch too much of it (regardless of which political bent its broadcasting) act like such blithering idiots all the time. ** Edited by Beerman at 5/28/2026, 11:00:43 AM

Sure you do

First of all, there was plenty of drek in the 80s also. You just don't hear it anymore because it was drek. You are hearing the greatest hits of the 80s, and you are comparing it in your mind to the baseline garbage that's on the air today and won't stand the test of time. The prolific use of hit oldies in commercials is because that's the age of the folks they are trying to sell stuff to. Not to mention that the music that was popular during your more formative years is always going to be more appealing to you than stuff that has come out more recently. 30 years from now there will be plenty of todays hits being used for all of the same retro reasons, to appeal to today's children. ** Edited by Beerman at 5/6/2026, 11:16:51 AM

The Lounge 3 mo ago

That's how it works

No one is ever concerned about themselves. Everyone is always sure that they understand what they're hearing for exactly what it is, and not impressionable. At the same time, everyone is also concerned that everyone else will misunderstand or be influenced by the words that they are hearing. The thing is, social media influencers are not delivering news. They're selling a point of view. And if you were inclined to believe in it, you are the mark

The Lounge 3 mo ago

You could have stopped at "prominent people on X"

Just say no to punditry. All the value of a career politician with even less accountability. These are people who make a living off of making the world a worse place. Stop listening. For you. For your family. For humanity.
