I was actually thinking of the "blue stocking" movement of the 18th century which was sort of this early feminism movement where women got to together to do "men" stuff like discuss literature and the news of the day stuff but that was something different. (or was it? maybe they borrowed it)
So there you go, sort of a Scotch Irish thing as was Presbyterianism. The word to look for is "blue stockings" which has gotten shortened to blue hose. (I don't know why, blue stockings sounds better)

We've traveled to Scotland-Ireland twice , NYC, Cape May
We just love each other's company. He's not much of a sports fan but his grandson is, so got 3 extra tickets to take them to the Delaware game. When we were almost to Smithfield his wife said how do you think the game will go. I said we'll have about a 5 TD lead at half time. Probably up by 50 by the 4th. If it's OK, well probably leave early. It was then she said, you do know Don graduated from Delaware. I thought she was joking because she's always pulling my leg. Don has degrees from several schools. I made some silly comment but sure enough he did.
