It sounds like she gave a number to FSU which they couldn’t or wouldn’t match. The AD apparently established an NIL cap and is getting lots of arrows from some of the fan base.

the FSU AD, is terrible. It is amazing he is still employed there but, it just speaks to the entire ineptness of the FSU athletic operation. It doesn't say a lot for Jim Phillips and the ACC leadership that they were played by FSU.

it's a different calculation, but I always wonder when I see these NIL stories, what is the number that would make them stay. And the potential to make the WCWS also has to be a factor. Does the incumbent program have to pay 1.2X or would 0.8X be enough? Obviously depends on a million different factors. Where X is the amount being paid by the new program. Of course, every situation is unique, but I definitely think a lot more about the calculus that these young kids are needing to go through to make these huge decisions. I pray they all have wise people AND people that love them advising them, because I think as someone said above, a lot of softball careers just ended today. That's sad.

One of the main reasons I became more interested in softball vs football/basketball the past few years was because of the "purity" of it ie it was less about money and more about college students playing a sport they loved while pursuing a college education. Well, it seems like that is rapidly changing with softball as well (although not near the level of football/basketball thank God). Again, I don't fault any player going after money if it is there, even if it means transferring schools to get it. It just makes it less enjoyable to me as a fan. I don't know what the answer is for the money aspect of college athletes being paid, but it seems like something has to change to keep a somewhat level playing field for all.

Yes, transfers and NIL (which is encouraging tranfers) has created a mess, but there's still so much to love about our team. I would love to see the day when the ladies could make a decent living off the game without the loss of dedication and commitment. So far, our softball ladies haven't become mercenaries. With rare exception, if a player has left it hasn't been driven by money. I generally have very little faith in our government's ability to fix any problems, but there is pending bipartisan legislation aimed at addressing the problem. Whether it will pass or not, and if so, whether it will be sufficient to restore a value system that I can stand behind is still anybody's guess. Here's a link to the proposal:

The ladies certainly deserve to be paid whatever the market can bear. But I don’t have to like the Wild, Wild West. Just think if you were an FSU fan - your best two players just (potentially) left town for greener pastures.

I feel like her departure is more about the opportunity to leave college with a national championship than about the money. She had already signed a Nike NIL deal that stays with her, without need to earn it through ties to any current or new school. The rumors, however (and I'll consider them rumors until more unfolds), of crazy new money for her to transfer are troublesome nonetheless. She is from Georgetown, TX and for the past 2 years the WCWS finals have been battles between the 2 best teams from her home state.

So, although it is difficult to watch the follow-the-money-revolving-door, at least you don't have to worry about Virginia Tech becoming the Armadillo Hokies.
