That’s where they left their cars when they flew out.

Blacksburg airport is around 1000 feet higher in elevation than Roanoke which degrades engine performance and lift especially on a hot day. Research "density altitude" for a more precise explanation.

The charters I've flown on from/to BCB were all in prop planes like the one they took to Baton Rouge. For those flights, we were warned to plan for the possibility of having to fly out of ROA instead of BCB, but my understanding is that fallback was only in the event of bad weather.
I guess that even if they could safely land the jet at BCB, they'd still have to safely fly it back out to its next destination.

In either instance, always great to have more runway than necessary. 34 year air traffic controller and just as long a private pilot.
