Tough sell unless we play more home games.

Chicken. Egg.
If they had a real stadium where they could charge admission and sell tickets, they'd play more home games. I'll die on that hill.

what kinda of stable attendance number would they need?
For VT to feel good about investing into major upgrades what kinda attendance numbers do you think VT would expect?

unless you can sell season tixs in the low 1000s how can you begin to pay for it? one of the sadder things is you cant even get students to support the team for free. to be fair that seems to be everywhere. for whatever reason watching softball mainly seems to be for grandpa/granny and beer swilling guys with massive bellies- neither of which Blacksburg has a ton of. if there are examples of really successful softball programs with Blacksburg weather and geography (not to mention population) , I'm not aware of them. looking at UVa and LSU last couple of weeks- lots more money to build , lots more amenities. Certainly a nicer experience for those who do attend but are that many MORE people coming to games ? My guess is None of these programs , even in the SEC, begin to pay for their selves. At this point it is hard for VT to accomplish anything athletically (except football) without some really serious vanity money earmarked for a specific sport coming from one or a handful of wealthy people. ** Edited by Vippie1 at 5/18/2026, 8:15:18 AM ** Edited by Vippie1 at 5/18/2026, 8:18:10 AM

Let me know when you get to $20-25 million of season ticket commitments
Because that is what the new Uva softball stadium reportedly cost. So even if you can get a thousand people to buy season tickets at $200 , that is all of $200000 ( and I bet you can not) , that is 1percent of the total capital cost. You dont have to have a MBA to figure this one out.

I’d give much more than $200 for season tickets. I know I’m not alone.
Are we going to pay for stadium renovations entirely with season ticket sales? Of course not. Neither is anyone else. We didn’t for baseball either but softball does at least draw bigger crowds. What I know for certain is whatever we charge for season tickets is more revenue than the current state. I used my MBA to figure that out.

Is it more money?
Demand goes own with charging admission. And you have added expenses of hiring people and I assume minor construction. Whatever the net net it won't be poppycock in regards to the expense of real capital improvements that are being proposed. Like every other sport not called football it isnt about making a penny, it is only about deciding how much you're willing to lose on each sport every year. I like our Olympic sports but im not blind that they are a financial drain, that won't begin to be solved by anything but huge gifts from wealthy individuals, that may not exist.

THAT should be priority one! Get a real pressbox, seatback chairs for 75%
of fans, priority seating with an inside box seating area for 50-100 season ticket holders, all seating areas covered and real concession areas. "Build it and they will come" along with their $$$$$. Am I delusional? Maybe but this is not out of the question with a dedicated funding scheme.

Well, you have to find opponents willing to come Blacksburg before . . .
March 7th and it can't be Wagner, Fordham, George Mason or Towson. UVA did get Ohio State, Maryland, and Michigan (also came to Salem) but those schools really aren't trying real hard in softball right now.

Not going to help your SOS but point was/is it's going to be . .
. . . difficult to get any team that will to come to play in Blacksburg in February.

Yeah. The weather is a big factor. But also, if you want a tough SOS,
you're going to have to play those early weekends on the road, likely in the south against SEC foes, because it's unlikely that they'll want to travel up and play in Virginia during the cold. Instead, Tech's gone down to play at Alabama three times under D'Amour, with two of those times coming in February and one in March. As far as the weather goes, here's a list of weekends in February and March, the Blacksburg weather and where VT played: - Feb. 5-7: Snow on ground in Blacksburg; VT played in Columbia, S.C. - Feb. 13-14: In the 40s, low 50s when baseball hosted W&M; VT played in Charlotte, N.C. - Feb. 20-22: Anywhere between 35 and 60 when baseball hosted Rutgers; VT played in Athens, Ga. - Feb. 27-March 1: Between 32 and 57; VT played in Auburn, Ala. - March 5-8: 60s and 70s; VT hosted tournament in Salem. First true warm weekend of the spring. In an ideal world, VT hosts a tournament one of those first few weekends and it's warm and an SEC team comes to play. But that's just not really how it goes. As you said, has to be decent competition — and you also have to get lucky. VT hosted Michigan at Salem, like UVa did in Charlottesville, and the Wolverines won the Big Ten last year. Just OK this year, though. Made NCAA Tournament but was 40th in RPI. If you're the Hokies, you're probably trying to play somewhere like Clearwater as much as you can to face the best competition as possible early in the season, because it's a huge résumé boost if you win. Even that can be somewhat of a crapshoot, though.

Yep. Pete needs to find some way to get to Clearwater or Cathedral City.
Duke played in both this season.
