Here's the explanation on that from the committee chair
Her transcript was posted on D1 Softball this morning. Take it FWIW. On UCLA vs. Florida State for the #8 seed and UCLA’s ‘better top 25 wins’ “That is one element that we’re looking at, so I don’t mind going through some of the metrics to provide a little bit more color of it. So UCLA was 20-8 vs. Top 50, includes seven Top 25 wins vs. Nebraska – who’s the 3 – Florida, Oregon, Duke, LSU, Texas A&M, and South Carolina. Only losses to Top 50. Better record in Top 50 games. And again, those are like slight differences there. But UCLA, despite the head-to-head loss to Florida State, across many comparison points, UCLA was slightly better. More Top 50 wins, more wins vs. teams in the NCAA tournament. “Whereas Florida State, 17-8 in the Top 50. They have seven Top 50 wins as well, one vs. Florida, one vs. UCLA, but then Stanford, Virginia Tech, and three vs. Clemson which were 16, 18, 24… they did get swept by Stanford in the regular season, so if you think a little bit of UCLA vs. Nebraska, they were 1-3; Florida State vs. Stanford, they were 1-3. So that kind of played into that, when I said better Top 25 wins and kind of where those teams ended up from an RPI perspective.”

Based on the Massey ratings...
...and I can promise you that there is no analysis going on in any NCAA selection committee that is more mathematically sound than these ratings, the only teams that got ripped off from a hosting standpoint were: * Texas Tech, who he has 7th (Tennessee, who he has 11th, got their top 8 seed) * Virginia Tech, who he has 14th (OK State, who he has 17th, got our hosting slot) Of note, he has UCLA ranked 3rd and FSU 10th, so the fact that they were agonizing over those two teams for the final top 8 slot is kind of crazy. It should've been close between Texas Tech, Florida, Tennessee, and FSU for the 7th and 8th spots. Anyway, selection committees for playoffs are dumb and unnecessary and I hope our ladies are unbothered by it all. So grateful for their efforts this year!

Head to head means nothing which is criminal. This system is idiotic at
times. If I was FSU i would be pissed.

Head to head is meaningless, overall resume dictates seeding.

That’s stupid. Only the NCAA can pretend results on the field don’t matter
If it’s THAT close and you have a head to head use that. Also of note…FSU won regular and postseason titles in the #2 RPI league. UCLA didn’t win either title in the #3 RPI league Until the softball tournament ACTS like it’s a national tournament and not the SEC/UCLA Invitational it will get in its own way from growing to its potential

Agree. If you have to split hairs to add one team over another, then ....
... head to head should matter the most.

Pains me to say but I will be rooting for FSU to advance and win at UCLA.

Yep. Don't want SEC or B10 to win.

The entire section process, for whatever sport, is so subjective that
it must frustrate coaches (particularly non SEC coaches) to a huge extent. Seems clear that RPI was weighted heavier than other indexes that I understood where to be used , despite all the clear idiocies of the RPI. I don’t claim to know much about the 16 teams in front of us, but our win percentage against the SEC apparently didn’t matter. I can only say that I will be rooting against every SEC team this year. They have clear $ advantages in most cases and now the NCAA giving them home field advantage. Sickening. I hope our girls and coaches can think about all this in a way that motivates them and not in a way that hurts them. LGH!

The committee already has made up their minds on who they think is the best
They will use what ever metrics are needed to justify their choice.

Exactly right. It’s an invitational tournament
Only the conf tournament winners clearly won their way in ESPN owns the tournament rights & a huge SEC contract. They’re going to promote the SEC over everyone else

Think Zoe etal are not motivated?
With any of the perceived "weaknesses," and Zoe is mentioned as one on D, the grit and moxy of these women is a product of Pete's etal recruiting, development, and positive (pragmatic) mental attitude.
