Maybe it’s Clemson and UNC to the SEC?
from Inside Carolina:
And any such group interested in seeking a potential departure from the ACC includes North Carolina, multiple sources told Inside Carolina. The Tar Heels even could be considered at the front of that pack, alongside Clemson, sources said about the next round of realignment that's brewing.
—————
Remember when I said that VT should try to stay close to UNC to tag along in the next realignment cycle?
It might be Clemson that joins UNC in the SEC instead of UVA, Duke, NC State, or VT.
However, if you think about it, this isn't necessarily bad for VT.
Seems like the SEC just want the best football program along with UNC. In other words, if VT becomes as competitive as Clemson, it could have a chance. In fact, I think the SEC would choose VT over Clemson if VT becomes as good as Clemson, as VT would deliver a new market.
Now the real question is: can Coach Pry deliver?
The next few years will be critical.

If you dig into what has leaked out concerning the likes of UNC, Clemson and Florida State you will find one common theme. They are doing a lot of background preparation, not only to be viable in the new college pay for play environment but they are preparing to leave the conference; commissioning studies, hiring consultants, etc. Unless Virginia Tech has some super secret background channels that cannot be accessed by freedom of information act by any news media then it is very apparent that Virginia Tech is doing absolutely nothing. In fact, everything they’ve done just to prepare for this upcoming year has been a slog. Just listening to Whit Babcock in one of his only recent interviews, it was apparently quite the struggle just to come up with the money to pay players this first year of the settlement.
Whit Babcock has been running this athletic department like it was more of a G5 program than a power 4 program. They simply lack the infrastructure, the aptitude or the will to do much more than they’re doing right now which means they are not going to be a target of the power 2. And I don’t think the administration cares to be quite frankly, regardless of what the donor/fanbase thinks or wants. Perhaps it boils down to a simple funding problem that no one is willing or capable of fixing. I know it sucks, but that is what it is. You don’t hear a peep out of VT administration about any of this which is quite telling.

IN the ACC. Likely top of conference plus ND games locked-in to max media distribution. ACC schedule, P2 money
The dilemma is the risk of a post-Dabo team and the future ACC make-up I suppose.

whether or not the remaining ACC schools are still offered 2 AQ’s to the CFP or only 1.
We’ve all postulated why UNC wouldn’t leave UVA behind and why they wouldn’t leave NC State behind, but what if the ACC was granted viability by ESPN back during the February contract look-in? All as a tool to allow the barriers to be brought down to let the P2 finish what they’d started.
Maybe NC politicians are OK if NC State is “left behind” in a conference earning $50M a year with two bids to the CFP and still a high end hoops conference? Maybe VT and UVA are Ok sticking it out together along with NC State, Duke, Wake Forest and GT in the same deal?
The Big 12 schools got paid to let Texas and OU leave, I think maybe the ACC got the same deal back in February.

State will be politically tied to UNC. The policies put in place by the NC State controlled UNC Board of Governors will prevent that from happening. Duke has too much money and is too big a basketball brand/power. I believe the SEC knows this and is prepared to take all 3. The exploding population and economic growth of North Carolina makes that an economic no brainer in my opinion. They will also take UVA who like Duke has a ton of money and relatively large athletic budget. UVA for all their inept futility has the money to compete if they decide they really want to.
VT is not tied to UVA the way State is tied to Carolina from an administrative standpoint. We also lack the infrastructure, the aptitude, the budget or the will to seriously pursue any p2 inclusion which is why you hear absolutely nothing about this coming out of Burruss or Merryman/Jamerson. You don’t even hear any media speculation that includes VT.
The only silver lining in any of this that when the 7 or 8 schools that want to compete at the highest level of collegiate athletics leave, thenVirginia Tech will be in a better competitive position with the schools that remain in the ACC both on the field and financially (assuming 2/3 of our fanbase doesn’t check out).

Right? Is that how this works?

Any UNC insider who talks about UNC to P2 without addressing NC State
and the politics of the NC university system is just talking out his arse.
To your other point, I thought that VT should have been hitching their wagons to Clemson and FSU, not necessarily Tobacco Road. FSU and Clemson are 1. and 1a. of football powers in the ACC. We have a chance to be #3. But you say that Pry needs to deliver. I agree. But he is behind schedule. We should have seen more improvement by now. This VT decline into the second tier of college football has been going on for a decade or more--under Fuente, and even under the latter years under Beamer.
However, we still have a good foundation. Good school, great fanbase, great home environment, and as you mentioned, a state that neither P2 conference is in. So this can still be done.

REPEATEDLY STATED, THEY ARE NO LONGER INTERESTED IN EXPANDING!! The usual arrogance of UNC and it's mouthpieces comes through once again with this Jabroni. FSU and Clemson say "Hold my beer" in assuming either P2 conference wants to expand.

implications of that move would be tied up in Courts for years. That is, unless college sports implode and conferences as they exist now become non-existent. That could happen too I suppose.
