If they couldn’t build off of that success back then, what makes people think they can do it now?

you are regulated in a G5 conference, recruiting falls off the cliff. If the ACC were to add them today, and they had Pitt, VT, Louisville, BC, and Cuse coming to their stadium, what do you think would happen to their attendance and recruiting? If they then built an on campus stadium, do you think the alumni would have the money for NIL? Coaches? In todays world of seats at the table, do you think UConn, or any G5 schools would not make the investments to compete? Even now, watch Cuse, BC, Duke, Wake, GT, and others make a push to be at the top of their leagues. The ACC is top heavy now, but those that have taken their position in a power conference for granted, have got the message - loud and clear. How much you wanna bet that the ACC becomes much more competitive and less top heavy in the next few years?

It will take some major changes for UConn football to be competitive in the Big 12 or ACC.

Games were good and competitive: West Virginia, Pitt, USF, etc. Best game was against Michigan. They brought in extra bleachers in the end zones. Biggest crowd ever in stadium. They had a narrow lead very late in the 4Q and ended losing in a very close game. Given a good coach and incentive they can be very competitive. ** Edited by BigMike_ at 8/28/2024, 7:53:04 PM

which is approximately 25 miles away from their main campus in Storrs. Memorial Stadium, UConn's on campus stadium, was located where their multi-million dollar basketball practice facility (Werth Family UConn Basketball Champions Center) is now. In fairness to UConn, it was a very tight fit there so UConn couldn't have expanded the football stadium's beyond the approximate 16k seat capacity without demolishing other nearby athletic buildings/facilities (i.e. football practice field).

This would be a good first step.

facilities to free up the land. The school might (and I stress MIGHT) be able to build land nearby to build a stadium. However, it would be away from the rest of the athletic facilities. If you use the street view on Google maps, then you will see the space issue. Something else to consider is the state politics. Remember the State of Connecticut built the football stadium using taxpayer dollars. Even though the state probably regrets the decision because it couldn't lure the Patriots from Massachusetts, it has too much pride to give up on the stadium and let UConn walk away. Unfortunately, UConn is probably stuck there until there is a shift in the political winds.

perceived to care more about their basketball programs than their football programs even if it may have been the "right decision" for financial reasons. Like VT, UConn may be maximizing the usage of space on its land. However, it is also painting itself into a corner because everything is on top of each other and there is no available space to build new athletic buildings/facilities near where the old athletic building/facility currently exists.

could decide to never tear it down. If the state ever decides to demolish it, then UConn's next stadium will likely be wherever the state decides to build it.
