Pete Thamel says ACC Cal Stanford SMU talks continue, says there is a soft
deadline in week 1. Okay Notre Dame, add 1 frickin ACC game and drop one of your cupcakes. You already don’t have to play in Conference Championship like pretty much every other Power Conference team. You are supposed to be about giving, not getting, so give 1 frickin cupcake game, and you still can play the B1G games for the B1G bucks, like we all know you are going to do. Come on man!!!

Is there a time crunch for Stanford/Cal to make a conference decision?

I don’t know, he says there is a soft deadline this week, whatever that
means.

Has to be as Pac will be down to 4 teams at this time next year. Correct?

I assume that is why they are saying it is only a weak left to decide.
They need to determine where they will be in 2024.

Let’s be clear, he said I “feel” like there’s a soft decline CF week 1

People acting like $72 million in new money (adding the 3 teams) is nothing
Split 15/18 ways equally, sure…that’s not super significant. But these negotiations seem to be about unequal shares (which FSU and Clemson seem to want and I personally think is fair). Wake/BC/Duke/etc shouldn’t get an equal share unless they prove it on the field and in the stands. If you play in the ACC-CG and make an extra $7mil, or win the ACC and make the CFP and earn an extra $10mil… that money could be really significant for this conference’s members. $72 million is what ESPN is offering for adding 3 new schools…that’s a lot of new money, especially if it’s incentive-driven and rewarded to teams that perform. VT BABY!!!

WFU 20-19 in the ACC last 5 years
FSU 18-22. Who exactly is proving it on the field?

Then pay them accordingly, that’s the point.
FSU is the one clamoring for an unequal share for performance. It works both ways and I agree: take this $72+ million and incentivize it. If you win the ACC you get way more of a bonus than last place.

The money is only TV money. Doesn't help local businesses, etc.
There are almost no traveling fans from other teams. Who wants to watch Cal play? I would much rather watch a game against WVU vs VT.

Ok in college football power 5 SEC that is not a criteria
That ship has gone along time ago. Its branding marketing, TV shares and what market is all about. and guess what those criteria are measured by the conference leaders, and the media who dole out the TV rights or they dont. Right now, athletic programs are being tossed around or left out only by 'who they are and locale I.e. oregon state and Wash St) not by some small business in corvallis or pullman. yes its a shame.. but at the big picture 'nation sees college football SEC, and BIG 10 and rest are in open spaces and they still get good ratings and the nation still gets the buzz ... and the rest are left behind... So if ACC can be pragamatic and take these schools, grab some money and hang on. so what....

I agree with what you are saying. But if the payout is only a little more,
than you have to look at the other factors. For a home game at VT against WVU instead of Cal, can VT make a million or two more from ticket, food, and parking sales? Much less the benefit to local businesses, etc. If you are talking about a big increase in TV money, than the other factors get trumped IMHO.

TV money is all this whole thing is about. Envy of SEC/B1G media deals.
So play the game.

If you are looking at it from the colleges, there are other considerations.
Travel costs, local business impact, research with other schools, educational impact (increased/decreased enrollment), non-revenue sports impact, etc. They all have to be factored. It is not so simple as we get a little more money from the TV deal to add new teams.

My take- take the the schools for short term and run
The reason pac 12 collapsed is espn and fox had a number and fhe presidents felt their value was twice as much and they walked . And so did the media companies. Further pac 12 thought we show fhem and the pac 12 network in house. Failure Acc needs to be very pragmatic and squeeze out every $$ also they need programs like fsu to shut down fhe rhetoric - like when a coach critcizes an official. The gor is there and if a school wants to break it or leave great start rhe process and all existing money goes to escort amd not to the school for as long as negotiation is being comducted also more fines for public retoric Yeah this is not perfect ; and some acc schools -your value is not as good as u think it .is. There is room for not perfect

~$100M with added ACCN revenue.
H
Hardcore_Hokie
Yeah exactly. Adding Texas and California is a huge deal.
These numbers that are floating around aren’t including everything. People laughing at $75million and that’s not even including the ACCN subscriptions from adding two of the largest states in the country. This could be a really really big deal if the ACC negotiates it right. VT BABY!!!

I'd be fine using the whole $72m for incentives.
ACC football champ Football attendance for conference games ACC reg. season BB champ ACC BB tournament champ P5 OOC wins Graduation rates Maintaining players w/o transfers You know. Stuff like this. Merit related and also preserving the culture. LET'S COMPETE.

Yes, but you still have to cover the increased travel costs

Exactly. $72million is a ton of money if it’s results-based
Clemson and FSU want to be paid like Ole Miss and Indiana…then go ahead and win the ACC and some games in the CFB Playoffs. Done. Hell, win the MNC and maybe we can pay you more than all of the SEC and B1G teams. Hopefully the ACC can be creative with this; right now is our chance to right the ship. Take the ESPN deal. VT BABY!!!
Maroon Baboon Maroon Baboon
Better yet, do it as a cumulative jackpot💲for winning the MNC.
Take 20 million for winning the MNC. If no ACC team wins it, then it's 40 million the next year. 60 million the following. And so on. And put up 10m down to start for basketball. Let's start offering cash for what we want, and paying people who give it to us. In fact, I'd set up the whole conference like this in terms of other incentives (winning records, NCAAT/CFP bids, OOC wins, and what not). Sent the true standard for competition. Maybe if we are adding teams from other time zones, we should change the ACC name to the All-American Competition Conference or something like that. ** Edited by Maroon Baboon at 8/27/2023, 11:15:20 PM

Make it a performance league. Wins/Ratings/Attendance to get paid.
People are hating on FSU but they have a legit concern. If you bring the ratings, you should be paid; if you’re a bottom-feeder, you should not be paid on that same level. Wake Forest and Boston College should not earn the same football media revenue as Clemson. Take that proposed $72million and turn it into a results-based reward for schools that prove it on the field. ($20 million to the winner of the ACC would probably change a lot of FSU/Clemson/VT/UNC minds.) VT BABY!!!

Agreed. And seems likely it's about $40mm net
Say you had $31m in a fund for football success, $10m, $8m, $6m, $4m, $3m for top 5 in some metric (rankings, standings, ratings, etc) and $9m in something similar for basketball. Then if you make the playoffs you get another $10m, right? Seems like the delta for Clemson and Fsu is getting pretty miniscule. I don't agree that the biggest issue is fsu and Clemson thinking the acc is second rate. I think it's mostly about the money. They can still recruit in the acc just fine, and it's an easier path for sure. They probably wish the schedule was better ...

17 team ACC means 4 rivals + 4 rotating over 6 yrs.
Could see the heavyweights demanding better annual rival for that 4th game.

The Irish can put a little more skin in the save ACC game...hell, most ACC

Clemson destroyed them in the ACC champ game just 2 seasons ago. So what
You say, while technically accurate (if you're only counting reg season games), does leave out that key detail.

We embarrassed them last year. Curious to see what the game this year
looks like.

ND has beaten Clemson two of the last three times they've played
This game at Clemson will be interesting.

I think it will be a game with two "equal" QBs, so it should be a great one
Clemson with Ukulele behind center was a loss waiting to happen. Their current QB is much better. Now ND has Hartman from WF, and he's a darn good QB. That should be a great game!

Explain last year's game
ND had backup freaking Drew Pyne at QB and destroyed Clemson.
